Ultimately Mike decided on the bored girl at the check-out desk. Trying his best to discreetly target her with the app’s camera, he read the created sentence.
“The bored Sophia plays with her blond hair as she stares on her phone.”
Weird that it somehow knew the girl’s name, but Mike ignored it for now. He chose to start with something small and changed “blond” to “pink” and hit enter.

On the phone’s screen he watched as from one moment to the next Sophia’s hair color switched from blonde to a bright pink. It kinda suited her, he decided. But as Mike looked up, he visibly flinched, as he noticed the real Sophia’s hair also being pink. Worse, his outburst attracted the attention of some of the others in the library, including the now pink-haired Sophia.
He tried to play it off by staring down at his notes, but his thoughts couldn't focus on those. This One-Word app could actually alter reality. That was crazy. The power to change anything you wanted in the form of an app. On top of that, based on the girl’s lack of a reaction, it seemed like nobody but him was aware of the change. It was a bit concerning to Mia that someone could just change something about you without noticing, but she quickly got over it. The curiosity to see the limits of this app had won out.
Once the coast was clear Mia targeted Sophia with the app again, deciding to keep it to only one test subject for now. Not that she’d be aware of it and could complain, right?
“Sophia adjusts her clothes as she sits at the check-out desk.”
To see if you could change more than just humans, Mia changed “clothes” to “swimsuit”.
“Sophia adjusts her swimsuit as she sits at the check-out desk.”
The next moment the girl sitting at the check-out desk was only wearing a cliche dark blue swimsuit. Again Mia pretended to look down and adjust the ruffles of her gothic lolita dress. Looking so good required lots of work.
This pattern continued as Mia made more changes to Sophia.
“The student girl looks around innocently.”
Let’s see if full body changes were possible. Mia changed “student” to “cat”.
“The cat girl looks around innocently.”
Sophia now had cat ears in the same color as her hair poking out of her hair and a pink cat tail coming out from behind, among other less obvious cat girl traits. Mia almost began flapping her fairy wings in excitement for how well this was working.

Not noticing Sophia’s increasingly odd behavior, or the fact that it matched her own, Mia changed “face” to “screen”. Time to be a bit more creative.
“Sophia pretends to scratch her screen, as she looks away.”
Her facial features had been replaced with a flat, black screen, which used LEDs to project a cartoon-y cat face. Mia actually found her to be more expressive that way. Definitely more expressive than her own unmoving face of her doll body.
Mia flexed the ball-joints of her arms. The humans around probably wouldn't realize that she didn't have any muscles to stretch. Innocuously she looked over mid-stretch, only to notice a weird look on Sophia’s face. With massive eyes that barely left any remaining space for a mouth on her screen she was staring at her phone. Maybe the One-Word app could help and she generated a new sentence.
“Sophia stares in surprise at the One-Word-app on her phone.”
Wait, what?! Sophia also had that app on her phone? Did that mean she had been using it the whole time, too? But on who or what? Mia looked around the library, but aside from Sophia herself nothing looked out of place. Sophia did the same and finally their gazes met. The doll girl with fairy wings in a lolita dress and the pink-haired cat girl with screen face in a swimsuit were staring at each other.
