But when you were walking back to campus, someone noticed you. It was the annoying guy from next door, Chad. He too was in the store, and once you left he waited a few minutes and left too.
You had recorded the commands on the tape. "Chris," you said, starting with your own name, "you suddenly like pistachio ice cream and want to eat a scoop. Once you finish, your previous programming will reassert yourself."
It was just a test. You had mistakenly bought that ice cream instead of chocolate mint and it had been in the freezer for weeks.
Then Chad came by. Your door was locked, so he walked around the outside of the dorms to your first floor window, which you had left open. He sees you in there and leans in to speak.
"Chris, here's your new programming. You will find me attractive, my voice enchanting, and my touch exhilirating. You will fall in love with me, date me, and want to have sex with me. You will think of yourself as a transformed man most of the time; but whenever I kiss you, get close to you, or even hold your hand your mind will be that of a woman. All these feelings will develop only gradually. You will find it hard to admit even to yourself that you have these feelings, and will try to explain them away, but will still act according to them. Finally, you won't remember being given any of this programming."
You finish the tape and think about pistachio ice cream. Suddenly you want to eat some, so you scoop out some into a bowl. Although you wonder if robots can eat, and haven't felt hungry since transforming, you find that not only can you eat it, it's delicious! Then you finish, and you wonder how you could possibly have eaten even one scoop.
The programming worked, in other words. Though the thought comes into your head, unbidden... you'd really like to talk to Chad. You don't really know why, you never used to like him, but you want to....
