In the Magic Shop there are two items that work well together. Devised by wizards in the age of VCR Record is a magic handheld video recorder. It has one main ability and that is to make a special type of video cassette. The cassette is made by hitting the record button, and then the recorder is taken into a parallel universe and has the powers of a god in that universe where he can record whatever he wants however he wants. The Recorder then just has to hit the record button again and they'll be taken back to the instant they hit the record button in their original universe. The Specialized cassette will then pop out of the recorder.
Play on the other hand is a specialized VCR that specializes in playing Record's specialized cassettes. It can be plugged into most monitors, but doesn't require one for it's primary function. It takes viewers and puts them in a parallel universe in the place of one of the characters. The viewer's body will change to reflect the role Play put them in. They then will perform the actions of the characters in the cassette. After the cassette ends everyone will be brought back to their normal bodies roughly where they originally were assuming nothing is taking up the space. If plugged into a monitor people who couldn't be brought in can watch.
Over the years Record & Play have changed hands enough that the owners of Magic Shops that sell it have a number of cassettes for Play. More than enough that they can sell them separately if the store owner wants, but something about the two ends up with them being reunited again and again. Whether it be a customer that wants the other half, the magic shop having the other half returned, or both halves being bought and then sold to some random Magic Shop.
We however go and find the next owner of at least one of the items...
