(Adapted from "Officer Down")
After chasing a potential member of a drug syndicate that has literally been in the crosshairs of the police for the past couple of weeks, Dan caught up to the fleeing criminal in the alleyway and reached out to grab his clothes. Provided, Dan was a recent recruit, so he certainly lacks the experience for a swift arrest. Despite this, Dan remained tall and firm amidst the adversity, which was definitely necessary to stand up to the strong brute he was chasing. However, as he grabbed ahold of the criminal's jacket, he happened to throw his body to one side, spinning a bit, and causing Dan to momentarily stumble. That fatal step was enough for the criminal to turn the tables on him. Before he could react, the man grabbed him by the arm and landed a right hook to his jaw that could've put out the lights of an elephant. Nevertheless, somehow Dan was conscious enough to hear the crack of his skull as it hit the pavement. It certainly not what he expected when he first applied to be an officer, and training always seemed easy with his momentous strength and invigorating fervor. Alas, training was different than the real deal, and Dan could only lay supine as the criminal sprinted away. A great humiliation for a newbie with much promise, but it was about to get worse.
The next second, it was like he was having an out of body experience.
"Am I going to die? Maybe I'm already dead," he thought to himself as he looked down at his body, a grotesque sight at this moment in time. Although it seemed to still be breathing, a puddle of blood began forming around his head. Is it an illusion? Or a dream?
Before he could think any further, the K-9 Charlie, a large German shepherd, came tearing down the alley after the criminal.
Someone must have let him out of the patrol car...
He was followed by rapid footsteps, and Dan's spectral form turned to see one of his fellow officers, Linda, kneel quickly and feel for a pulse on his neck. Despite being just a year older than Dan, Linda spent a lot more time in the police force, and Dan had always regarded her as a mentor. She was frantically resuscitating Dan's comatose body as she repeated, "Dan, Dan...please get a hold of yourself." Of course, it was futile in effort.
"We have an officer down! Send EMT! Suspect fleeing on foot!" Linda finally yelled into the radio as she got to her feet.
At that moment, Dan felt an odd sensation, like he was floating away from his body. Actually, he realized, she was floating towards...
