Selena sat at the desk in her room in front of a black piece of paper. She was in her human form at the moment; it was much easier to manipulate a pencil without claws, as every werebeast knew. She was writing to the Oklahoma werehyena pack in hopes of gleaning some knowledge of how to be a proper werehyena alpha without having to reinvent the proverbial wheel.
"Dear Alpha Zuri," Selena began.
"My name is Selena Lyall. I am a new werehyena alpha from Stokerville, Jefferson County, Washington State, USA. I was born into a werewolf pack (super vanilla, I know) and the rotten luck to possess a dormant werebeast gene. As a result, my pack treated me as the resident omega. My oldest sister Luna was especially awful. She's the most beautiful wolf in the pack and Dad's default heir as alpha, so she treats 'the pack's pet human' like crap. My other sister Diana's a little better, but she loves to tease people and I was very teaseable. Unlike Luna, I don't think she gets that she hurts my feelings when she calls me her sidekick and stuff, but that doesn't make it any more fun. Worse, Mom and Dad made it very clear I'd have to leave the pack if I didn't shift by my eighteenth birthday.
"I had to do something. Luckily, my vampire friend Tatiana von Karnstein knew a really great witch's workshop where she got her fang dentistry done. She took me, and I bought something called the Werebrush. If I brush an animal and then my own hair with it on the day of the full moon, I'll shift into the werebeast version of that animal at night. I went to the zoo and brushed a hyena. It was going to be a wolf, but I'm not super close to my old pack and hyenas seemed cooler. I didn't expect I'd get a penis out of the transformation, but I've honestly been loving it.
"I quickly decided to start my own pack. Unfortunately, I'd only be able to turn people once a month with the Werebrush. I didn't want to wait, so I went back to Morgana to see what else she had. She sold me a cock ring called the Ring of Embraces. When I wear it on the base of my shaft, anybody whose orifices my semen enters will transform into a werehyena. It's been working great! My new pack has seven members already, counting myself, and I'm planning to add more.
"The problem is I don't know anything about being an alpha, let alone a werehyna alpha in particular. As basically a half-member of the pack, my parents never taught me anything about how they ran the pack, and I was often off on my own, so I didn't get too many chances to observe them. Since I didn't shift, I don't even know what our coming-of-age ritual is like. All I really know is the broad outline of our social structure: there's an alpha and hir mate on top, a beta and hir mate below them, an omega on the bottom, and... possibly others in between, I guess? Oh, and there are specific jobs like shaman and mistress of the hunt, but I'm not really sure what they all do.
"I really need to learn these things if I'm going to be a decent alpha. Would you mind paying me a visit soon to fill me in? And if you could, please bring Shaman Kweli with you to tutor my pack's shaman, Taylor Wagner. We REALLY have no idea how to do shamans do, other than worship the Moon. Hell, we don't even know the specifics of THAT! We look forward to being enlightened by the two of you.
Best wishes,
Alpha Selena Lyall of the Stokerville Werehyena Pack"
Selena folded the letter, placed it in an envelope, sealed it, and went out to get her bike. Rather than the post office (Selena had no idea what the Oklahoma pack's address was), she rode to Morgana's shop. She was confident Morgana could get the letter where it needed to be with her magic.
When she entered the shop, Selena passed two girls sorting merchandise. One looked like a teenage version of Morgana, and the other was a Hispanic-looking girl with caramel skin and fluffy, curly dark hair spilling around her shoulders.
"Hi!" said the younger Morgana. "I'm Vivi Faye, Morgana's daughter, and this is her newest apprentice, Dani Romero-Marquez."
"Dani?" Selena repeated. "Your girlfriend's the shaman in my werehyena pack!"
"Oh!" said Dani. "You must be Selena! Pleased to meet you. Is Taylor doing okay?"
"Just great," said Selena, "though she's still figuring out what her new job's all about. That's why I really need to send this letter. Where's Morgana?"
"Did someone mention me?" asked Morgana as she emerged from the backroom. "Ah, Selena Lyall. I see you've finally had the chance to meet my daughter Vivienne."
"Yeah," said Selena. "She looks almost just like you. Anyways, I'm here to ask if you could send this letter to Alpha Zuri of the Oklahoma werehyena pack. I don't know where shi lives, you see."
"Happily," said Morgana. "I'm often asked to deliver mail to... secret... to risk sending to the mortal post office. Hermes!"
A beautiful snowy owl flew out of the backroom. Morgana took Selena's letter and handed it to the owl, who took it in his talons. "This," Morgana said, "is Hermes, my messenger owl. All I need to do is hand him a letter or package, and he'll mystically sense where he needs to take it."
"Cool," said Selena. "How much?"
"A dollar and fifty cents," said Morgana.
Selena dug the money out of the pocket of her jeans. "Here you go. Thanks so much, Morgana!"
The witch smiled at her therianthropic client. "Anytime, Selena. I'm always happy to help a werebeast in need."
