Suddenly, the door to his room opened and his mom came in slowly, carrying a bowl of water and a washcloth. Happy to see her, Jeff immediately forgot about his pyjama-peeing plan. He held up his arms and said "Ma-ma!", beaming at her. "Oh, you woke up already! Did you have a nice long nap?" she asked as she picked him up. "Long nap!" Jeff repeated after her, for some reason he just felt like saying the words. "Yeah, grandma called just when I wanted to wake you up. We should go to the playground to make sure you get tired again tonight, huh?" "Yay, waygwound!" he yelled enthusiastically - her really wanted to go out and see what the neighborhood looked like when he was this little, and maybe he'd meet Emily or Jamey, his oldest friends he remembered from daycare.
"Ok, let's just get you changed and dressed and we can go." Mommy sat Jeff down on the changing table and finally got the pyjama off him. "Did you pee a lot?" she asked when she saw his thick saggy diaper. "Mada pee and poopoo!" he answered proudly, laying down and pulling his legs up to his tummy to present his work. "Really? I think that's only pee in there." she chuckled and ripped the diaper open. "Whew, juuust in time. You peed a whoooole lot! And there really is an itty-bitty poo!" she laughed. She quickly cleaned him up with the washcloth and blew a raspberry on his tummy, making him laugh enthusiastically as she put a new diaper on him, followed by thick blue winter tights and a red sweater with a fire truck on it.
Jeff couldn't wait to go to the playground. The slide would be much too big and scary for him and he probably couldn't go on the big kid swings yet, but he remembered that he used to help push his little sister on a toddler swing a few years into the future - hopefully it had already been installed. And even if it hadn't, he was still eager to go explore the outdoors with mommy.
