Just as Selena was getting out her golden bowl to recharge the Ring of Embraces, she heard her phone ring. She answered it. "Hello? This is Selena Lyall."
She heard Stella's voice on the other end. "Hi, Selena!"
Selena grinned at the voice of her packmate. "Oh, hi there, Stella!"
"Uhhh..." said 'Stella,' "...that's what I'd like to talk to you about. I don't want my name to be Stella anymore, Selena. My parents named my that when they thought I was a girl. I've known for years how wrong that girl name sounded on me. I've given this a lot of thought, and I've decided I want to be called Skyler. That's spelled S-K-Y-L-E-R."
"Oh, okay!" said Selena. "Whatever makes you feel like you, Stel... Skyler. I'm glad to see you're starting to explore your non-binary identity more."
"Oh, I am!" Skyler said proudly. "I've even cut my hair short. I'm thinking about dying it purple soon."
"Any pronoun changes that I should be aware of?" asked Selena.
"No public ones yet," said Skyler. "I'm not comfortable fully coming out until I've gotten my graduation nest egg from my parents. But among the rest of the pack, I'd really prefer if you always called me 'shi,' even when I'm in my human form."
"Got it, Skyler," said Selena. "Oh, by the way, I'd like to formally offer you the rank of pack beta. You've got the leadership qualities a beta needs."
"I'd be honored to be your beta, Selena," said Skyler. "Thanks! Well, bye, I guess."
"Bye, Skyler!" Selena said before hanging up. She repeated the name Skyler a few times to commit it to memory.
