Like many families during the summer months, the Holts were headed to the Grand Canyon for their vacation. John Holt, the father of the family, was rather hesitant to go driving that far. Ever the frugal man, he suggested just going to a local golf course in their home state of Illinois. Unfortunately for him, it was 1 against 3.
Mary Holy, his wife, spurred on by the contagious enthusiasm of their 10-year-old twin sons Connor and Kyle, kept insisting that they go. And even without that, Connor and Kyle would not stop asking him. So, John gave in. It would put a dent in their budget, but, he seemed to be outvoted. He had to admit as well, it did seem like a fun prospect, too. He'd never been to the Grand Canyon.
"Are we there yet?" Connor asked, an impatient tone to the young boy's voice.
"No, dear. I told you, it's going to be a few more days," Mary replied, remaining patient despite the number of times she's been asked this same question.
"What about now?" Kyle asked, grinning mischievously.
"Son, you heard what your mother just said. You don't need to repeat your brother's question," John answered firmly. He was glad his wife was there to help keep the two from bothering him the whole way there, but even she couldn't fully stop them. At the very least, they were making some progress. After nearly 3 hours of driving, they were almost to their first pitstop in St. Louis. Or at least, that was the plan.
As they drove along a country road, the car started sputtering and making odd noises as it slowed down. John frowned, pushing harder on the gas. They only had a little bit to go! But, no matter how much energy he had to keep going, the car was not having it, the engine coming to a complete silent stop.
"Well...that's not good," John started, then sighed. "There must be some houses or farms nearby. I'll go see if I can find someone to help. Everyone stay put, you hear me?"
"Aww, can't we come?" Connor and Kyle said in unison.
"You heard your father, you two," Mary responded before looking to John. "Don't be too long, dear. Worst case, I can call my cousin to drive down here and help out."
John nodded. "I'll be as quick as I can."
Then he began walking off, heading towards what looked like a farm in the distance.
