The panther decides that his hunger supersedes everything else. It also helps that the humans are moving in such large and slow groups. To the panther it was like the humans were asking to be eaten.
The panther continued on to the next group. On his way there the panther crushed small groups of people, no more than a dozen in size. The panther did not notice or did not care about what happened to those people. He did notice groups of at least 80 or more people and licked them up and swallowed without stopping.
When he finally arrived at the next large group of humans he continued his pattern of devouring most of the crowd. He toyed with some before swallowing as before. Some of the humans did something different however. They would actually dive beneath his paws. The panther thought that they must think being crushed beneath his paws would be less painful than being digested alive.
The panther continued this pattern with most of the groups for the better part of the day. By the time his hunger was satisfied none of the humans he could detect remained. He sat down to clean himself again and made a discovery. Some of the humans that had dived under his paws had actually climbed between his toes. He shook them out of their hiding place.
