She woke up with a start, hearing traffic near her. Her view was blocked by grass, but she knew she was near a road.
And her head hurt.
She raised her head up and looked around. She was in a drainage ditch, not visable from the road. Slowly started to rise, but somethng wasn't right. She tried to stand, but she couldn't on two legs. Only four.
She looked at her fore legs hard. They looked... wrong. They should be different. Somehow. She took a few tenetive steps forward and looked at the reflection she saw in the water. A deer. Of course she was a deer. That would explain the hooves.
Why did that seem right and wrong at the same time?
She raised her head slighty and could see the heavy traffic, but it seemed familiar somehow. It drew her, like someone in one of the cars should help.
But she knew it wasn't safe. Better to sort this out alone, for now.
She bounded up the other side of the ditch, though the trees and into the greenbelt. The sound of the traffic started to fade quickly, and it wasn't long before she was alone.
She stopped and looked again. Definitly a deer. She looked a bit more, definitly a doe. She was a doe.
It seemed so wrong.
She tried to remember what had happened before she woke up, but it was all a blank. She seemed to know stuff, like what she was, but she couldn't remember anything else. It was like she was born just a few minutes ago.
