The Magic Shop

Coversing with a Cranky Kappa

Morgana had some business to take care of today. Later on, she'll need to restock more werefox inhibitor potions. Renata was going to need more of them to keep her new werevixen impulses under control. And Morgana was pretty sure that Kristi will be wanting some eventually. But there was another Kristi wanted as well. Kristi had been rather proud of her chubby body which got slimmed down by her new werefox metabolism. She wanted to regain her former figure, which meant she would be wanting that magic chankonabe stew as well. As such, Morgana needed to speak with Kyūri Sensei about allowing another student.

The corpulent kappa answered the call of her scrying pool promptly enough. The turtle-man crunched on a cucumber before asking, "So, are you about ready to send me the new student?" asked Kyūri.

"I'm arranging things as we speak," said Morgana, "Though actually, I have another werehyena and a werefox who are also interested in joining your school."

Kyūri glowered and said, "I'm not running a fat fantasy camp, you know."

"I thought I made my point about you opening up your school to foreigners," said Morgana.

"It's not the foreigners that bother me so much. It's not even them being shiyūdōtai that's a problem. In fact, I've gotten new students over here who are shiyūdōtai," said Kyūri.

"Then what is the problem?" asked Morgana.

"Sumo wrestling is an ancient, sacred tradition. Even in this modern world, it should be properly respected. My special chankonabe should be earned by those who are committed to this tradition, not given to girls who only want to change their figure," said Kyūri, "How would you like it if girls only wanted to become witches because they would get a discount at a store or show off to their friends than bothering to study anything?"

"I would at least give them fair warning before I dismissed them, but I see your point," said Morgana, "I'll make it clear these girls that they're going to have to work for that stew.

Kyūri gave a small nod, careful not to jostle his head water. "I'm not going to indulge any insolence. If they show any disrespect to the way of the sumo, I will be throwing them out of my school. And I do mean that quite literally." It was no empty threat. As old and obese as he was, the kappa master was still very strong and can put many heavyweights in their place.

"Yes, I'll be sure to tell them that," said Morgana.

"So, are these students ready to come?" asked Kyūri.

"It's taking a bit of arranging," said Morgana, "We can't just send them all the way to Japan with little explanation."

"Isn't that what geises and glamours are for?" asked Kyūri in annoyance.

"Unfortunately, one of the werehyena's mother has a natural resistance to geises," said Morgana, "I should probably tell you that she has familiar connections with the Vordenburgs."

"The Vordenburgs?!" Kyūri almost leapt to his feet, though that wasn't so easy with his girth. He stilled himself when some of his water sloshed out. "I won't be having any monster hunters attacking my school," snapped Kyūri.

"And I don't intend for Beck to lead them to you," said Morgana, "However, her mother is quite hardheaded even without her natural resistance. It may yet take some time to persuade her. Besides, you shouldn't have to fear. The Vordenburgs only hunt evil beings." Just like humans, there are still some bad eggs among magical beings. Some vampires really were the monsters that movies and novels made them out to be, though the von Karnstein clan were obvious examples of vampires not being evil. Fortunately, there weren't any evil creatures close to Stokerville. The werefox skulk didn't really count as they were more thoughtless than heartless.

"The problem with monster hunters is that they don't always check if a magical being is good or evil. If it isn't human, it's fair game," grumbled Kyūri.

"Kyūri Sensei, I promise I will not allow any of the Vordenburgs to harm you, your students, or your academy," said Morgana, "I'm not even sure they have to be involved in the first place."

Kyūri grunted and said, "Even so, if it comes down to accepting this 'Beck' or protecting my dojo, you know which one I will choose."

"I understand," said Morgana grimly. Changing the subject, she asked, "So, what about your side? Are there any yokai who wish to come to America?"

Kyūri scoffed and said, "I may as well have a lottery over it. These young yokai are so eager to see America. How many are you sending here?"

"Assuming I can arrange for Beck to go, three at the moment," said Morgana.

Kyūri gave another small nod and said, "I'll certainly be sending over a kitsune and a tanuki, I'm not certain about the third yet."

"I should let you know that Stokerville has a rather high lesbian population among the youths," said Morgana.

Kyūri lifted an eyebrow, "Vampire clan?"

"What makes you assume that?" asked Morgana.

"I'm well over a thousand years old. I've seen what happens when vampire clans of particular tastes stay in one area for generations. I'll be sure to send someone who won't be blue-balled there," said Kyūri.

Morgana resisted sighing over the old kappa's crassness. Ancient yokai are very set in their ways and it was mainly the need to keep his school open that persuaded Kyūri to expand his student roster like this. She could see where he was coming from in his arguments, but that didn't mean it got tiresome to listen to them. It would have been easier to simply buy the recipe for the chankonabe from Kyūri, but the kappa would sooner fry his own head than part with that secret recipe. Morgana hoped that Ellie, Beck, and Kristi will be willing to follow Kyūri's rules when they get to Japan.
