"Chet! Hang on a minute!" Emma called out.
You turn around and walk back into the entryway. Was she that upset by her audience getting away? Emma and the old guy are both looking at you. Seeing the blush on his face, you wonder if maybe he was hitting on Emma before she called you back?
"Geoff Landis, meet Chet Morison. Chet, meet Janis's dad!" Emma said smiling widely.
Oh snap! As you shake hands you recognize him from Janis's high school graduation photos. He's put on some weight in the last couple years and grown a goatee. You don't think it suits him very well, but happily he probably won't ask your opinion.
"Chet, is that short for Chester?" Mr Landis asked.
"Ah, no sir, just 'Chet'. It's a family name."
You wonder if he's also trying to ignore Emma's cleavage as she leaves the desk to come stand beside you.
"We should go grab Janice if you still plan to treat us all to lunch?" Emma asks.
"Ah, yes." Geoff glances distractedly at Emma's chest, making her smile widely. "Why don't you run ahead and get us a booth, if you would Emma?"
"Are you sure? I don't mind coming with you, Pearson Hall is confusing for first time visitors." Emma offered.
You haven't had a class in Pearson since freshman seminar, but don't recall it being particularly confusing. What it does have are a bunch of stairs. The thought of Emma's boobs bouncing in her low-cut top on all those stairs makes you feel flushed. You glance down at your phone to cover your discomfort.
The screen has refreshed to a new sentence: "Young girl flirting with a potential sugar-daddy." What the actual hell!? You stab the back button and the screen blanks while reacquiring geographic data. There's an indicator for you, Mr Landis, Emma, and some other students passing nearby. You select Mr Landis's indicator out of curiosity.
"55 year old newly divorced man enjoying the attention of a young woman."
Wait, hadn't Janice said a few months ago that her parents were seeing a marriage counselor? You guess it must not have worked. You wonder if Emma knew Geoff was coming to visit, and picked her outfit planning to vamp him? Your head is spinning trying to figure out what's going on, or what she remembers going on that would have her dressing and acting like this.
While you were distracted she and Geoff came to an agreement with her heading to reserve seats at the nice restaurant just off campus.
"So Chet, Janice tells me you're studying to be an engineer?"
"Yes sir, electrical engineering has been my passion since my first hobby kit."
You wince hearing the answer you rehearsed for scholarship interviews come out of your mouth. Still, this probably was a kind of interview, right?
"I hope you save some of that emotion to my daughter, she's a very demanding girl."
"No worries there, sir, we're very happy together."
You try to think of something to change the subject away from the passion you show his daughter, but instead let the conversation drop into an awkward silence. Geoff doesn't seem to need your help finding his way across campus. You lag back a couple steps to let a guy on a skateboard pass the two of you on the narrow sidewalk, glancing again at your phone. The prompt has refreshed to read "Man who hoped for better from his daughter's boyfriend." Geoff clears his throat and you realize the two of you are standing outside Pearson Hall already.
"If you need to take care of something, you can do that while I go get my daughter. We'll meet you at the restaurant." Geoff sighed. "I hope you spare her more attention than you have me." He shakes his head as heads into the building.
It's a race against time for you to figure out what to change before Geoff's prompt expires! The phrasing doesn't leave you a lot of latitude for change. You could maybe replace 'better' with something, but even then he'll still be disappointed. You select it and try to think of something that would make sense. 'A connection'? No that's two words. 'Respect' maybe? But then Geoff will think you don't respect him. So, something negative he didn't get..'fear'? No. 'Aversion' maybe? but why would he be upset by not getting that?
You notice a stopwatch icon blinking and panic, changing 'better' to 'affection' and confirming the change. The display blanks before seeking new geographic inputs. At least now he shouldn't be thinking about how you treat Janice, but what on earth did you just do?
