This story takes place in a world very much like our own. However there is one major difference.
About 30 years ago there was a steep change in births all across the world. More and more babies were born male then ever recorded. It got to the point where only about one in every 10 births was a female.
This posed a huge problem for the world as a shortage of woman would spell disastrous for the entire human race.
Fortunately after several years a solution was created. Advanced genetic engineering now allowed for a one time only transfer for a male to become female.
I’m order to stabilize the population a Gender Draft was created. Millions of men selected at random to become women and help stabilize the population.
This Gender Draft was successful in keeping the population stabilized but it didn’t solve the problem of the out of proportion male to female birth ratio.
To keep the population rate stable The Gender Draft was put into law. The draft had the ability to call upon any male younger than 21 years old to be changed into a female.
As the years progressed the Gender draft got more and more refined and the process easier. It became much easier to draft children who were just entering puberty.
Most Drafts now occur usually before the subject is 15. The subject has to be old enough for the process to be safe, but it’s now preferred if they are younger so they can grow up and experience puberty as a female. It allows for much healthier development.
However the law still allows anyone under the age of 21 to be drafted now. Whenever a male turns 21 it’s usually cause for celebration as it means their gender is locked in for life.
It’s been 30 years now since the draft was created and now it seems like a normal part of life for most people. While some still oppose it, the fact is for now it keeps the population rate stable.
