As Jill yammered on, Ashley absentmindedly slipped on the silver ring onto the ring finger of her right hand. She suddenly felt different, but she wasn't sure why yet. She sort of felt... powerful. As if she were a goddess who could rearrange the stars with a command. Yeah, the ultra-popular cheerleader always metaphorically felt that way, but this thought seemed strangely literal. Where was this coming from? Was waiting Brad to ask her out making her go LITERALLY crazy?
"...and then Aaron actually tried to ask me out!" Jill wailed in dismay. "Ugh! Can you BELIEVE THAT, Ash?! That pimply loser?! Gimme a freaking break! Hey, Ashley, are you even listening to me?" Jill shook her friend, who was staring off into space, apparently lost in thought and paying no heed to Jill's little monologue.
"Uh, what?" asked Ashley, snapping out of her reverie. "Were you saying something, Jill?"
"I so totally was!" sighed Jill. "I was saying that that ugly nerd Aaron actually had the nerve to ask me if I wanted to go out with him! Ew, majorly gross!"
"Aaron Abramowitz?!" Ashyley asked in disbelief. The cheerleader could scarcely imagine Jill Fraser dating a borderline friendless dork like Aaron. "D&D Club Aaron? Will the Walrus's friend?! That Aaron?!"
"Yes!" Jill moaned, her bubbly voice dripping with horror and disgust. "I just felt so embarrassed that I wanted to FREAKING die! He even invited me to come play Dungeons & Dragons or whatever it's called with him, Will, and Hannah! Ugh, why can't Aaron just start dating Hannah and stay out of my hair? Wouldn't you just HATE to be in my shoes?!"
What Ashley said next would have unintended consequences for reality. Looking back on it in the future, she considered it an abject lesson in choosing your words carefully... not that the end results weren't rather interesting.
