You were looking between the stalls trying to make a decision. If you were being honest, you weren't really interested in joining a club. Your life was chaotic and stressful enough as is, you didn't want to add demanding club duties on top of it all. So your best solution was trying to find something that was low maintenance, something where just being present would be enough. That's when one particular booth suddenly stood out to you, the Pride Club.
The eyecatcher were giant letters on top of it, each in the colors of a different ride flag, spelling “PRIDE” while surrounded by even more flags. Sitting below in the booth in front of a curtain you spotted two students in normal school uniforms, who were perking up a bit too enthusiastically the moment your body turned into their direction. Still, you decided to approach them.
“Heya, are you interested in the Pride Club?” asked the left student. His body had a typical male build with short blonde hair. Only now did you notice both were wearing (very colorful) name tags. His read “Cindy - He/Him”.
“We assure you, you’ll enjoy your time with us,” said the other student with the name tag “Taylor - They/Them”. They were dark-skinned with shoulder-length black hair and an androgynous build. “We welcome anyone, even if you're only cis-het and want to support us.”
You didn't think there was anything special about your identity or orientation, though to be fair with your demanding parents you never had much time in your life to ponder that yet. “Uh yeah, sure. I’d like to see what you can offer.”
“That's great!” A voice shouted from behind the curtain, followed by a person jumping out in front of you. Kyuu looked like your stereotypical magical girl with a pink frilly dress and pink hair in long twintails. Huh? Something felt weird in the way you just referred to kyuu. The name tag read “Stella - Kyuu/Kyuu”. How did you know which pronoun to refer to kyuu before reading it?
“Come on, we can do the stuffy bureaucratic stuff later.” Kyuu energetically grabbed your hand and with a spring to kyuus step dragged you to their clubroom, which thankfully wasn't far away.
It looked like every generic room in this school, which allowed you to focus on a few members that happened to present. There was an orange-furred cat person that seemed to fully kean into the popular catgirl aesthetic and a human-shaped mass of dark energy talking to each other. The former’s name tag read “Kelsey - Purr/Purr” and the latter’s said “Nika - Voi/Void”. It sounded like purr was trying to convince void to do purrs homework for purr. Sitting in a corner was a centaur with a male-built upper body. This one’s name tag said “Walter - Taur/Taur”. Taur was currently reading a historical novel.
Suddenly Stella thrusted a tablet into your chest. Not to be rude, but you had managed to completely tune kyuu out while surveying the other members. After a rather cute and very anime head tilt, kyuu thankfully repeated the last part. “We need your name and pronouns for your name tag. Everyone gets one. Don't wanna risk any misgendering here.”
“Oh that's easy,” you answered. “Ruby Alan, she/her.”
“Are you sure?” kyuu asked with a cheeky grin.
This time you were the one tilting your head.
“Labels keep changing and expanding all the time,” kyuu explained. “A single moment can cause you to reevaluate your whole life. It's very possible you just haven't found your identity yet, because you didn't know it even existed. That's what happened with Nika.” She pointed at void. “Our special name tags will also ensure that you’ll fit your chosen pronouns.”
“Okay, then I’ll at least take a look.” The screen was surprisingly plainly designed. A text field for your first name and a toggle for pronouns. Clicking on the latter revealed Wow, that’s a lot of options… Some of these options you were expecting, but some of these you were certain you had never heard before. It also included an option to create your own ones. Ultimately your eyes fell on…
