Dixie swayed happily as she walked through the Clinic, the brown bag bouncing against her hip as she moved to the examination room.
Ty's mother was distracted by filling out the clinic's paperwork. Women don't often make deposits, so the forms were a bit difficult to complete.
Dixie placed the frozen Ty on a lab table.
"Now Ty", Dixie beamed, "This is my chance to complete your transformation into something that will be completely harmless."
Dixie moved to a large machine, the cellular fluid extractor, and turned it on. It made a loud whirling sound. She placed the petri dish beneath a long syringe and filled it with fluid.
"This machine flushes out the eggs before they're impregnated. I am going to separate you into sperm and egg, honey. Then no more baby Ty."
The machine's light glowed red, then green. The process began. The petri dish filled with a milky white liquid. This would help float the sperm away from the egg. The lights blinked yellow--the transformation was complete.
Dixie bent over a smiled triumphantly. A small dribble of milky white washings, 7.5 ccs of fluid flowed into a test tube. Nurse Dixie tapped the sticky substance on the test tube side, put on a rubber cork and placed the tube in her front breast pocket. The egg was placed on a small slide for freezing and she handed one half of Ty to a lab assistant. The egg was prepared for freezing.
“Now we can make this ovum into someone else,” Nurse Dixie said proudly. And indeed, the ovum would be frozen for a while, until a few weeks later it was selected for unfreezing and use for in vitro fertilization.
As it unfroze, Ty’s consciousness returned- or perhaps not really Ty’s. See, it only comprised half of the genetic material that formed Ty, and soon a different half of material would form from it. Until it formed a full embryo again at the earliest, it still could not wish.
Soon the ovum felt sperm pressing against its surface and wearing through its walls, until one at last moved inside it and fertilized it. It realized instantly that it was not Ty anymore. Another identity came to it, reinforced by the sperm that now formed half of its genetics.
