Suddenly, a loincloth materialized around Jeff's waist, and thick hair grew from his arms and his legs. The hair on his head spiraled up into a grimy mop-like style, and a bone appeared in his right hand. His muscles bulged up a little, which was nice, but he was very surprised when nothing else changed. He was still Jeff, but buffer and more primitive, as a caveman version of himself.
"Ug, Jeff! There Jeff is. Where Jeff come from? Us not see Jeff, now Jeff here!"
Jeff turned around, hearing a familiar voice behind him speaking caveman language. It was his mother! She was standing outside a grass hut with his little sister. He must have just appeared to them in this version of reality. He decided he ought to say something to try to put her mind at ease.
"Ug, hi Mom. Jeff okay. Jeff, um, Jeff play bone, hunt mammoth."
Wait, that couldn't be right, could it? Why did he keep calling himself Jeff and speaking in short sentences? And why would his first idea, when lying to his mom, be that he would be playing with a bone and hunting mammoths?
Jeff thought to himself: 'Oh, that right, Jeff caveboy now. No talk future talk no more. Do caveboy things: bang bone, throw rocks, hunt mammoth.'
It was incredible that the Chronivac had put him into a stone age world of his own desires. It was awesome that he was a strong caveboy instead of a lazy suburban teen! But what would his family be like in this reality? His sister was looking at him with pouty, suspicious eyes, like she knew he was up to something. Just like she knew he was up to something in his original reality.
"Inside come in now, help Mom make dinner," said his mom in her gritty cavewoman voice, "Jeff play bone too long, need work like man. Jeff be man soon, then bang big bone!"
"Aw, mom!" Jeff said, sounding every bit the angsty teenager he was, even if he was a caveboy. "Ug, okay, Jeff coming," he relented. He wondered what kind of chores a caveboy might have to do in the caveboy days. He wondered what his sister was going to try to tattle on him about now. And most of all, he wondered what happened to the Chronivac.
