Libby being one of the first people to school found her spot in the gym bleachers while the custodians were still finishing setting up the microphones and speakers. She sat down in the front row on the farthest end. Whenever they had assemblies she'd normally sneak out the back doors instead of fighting through the main doors.
"Libby!" a girl with brown hair comes running over with her arms outstretched. She nearly slams Libby into the wall hugging her. "Did you get taller?" she says looking up at Libby at chest level.
"Hey Maya, uh maybe?" She laughs at the question before taking their seat. Libby reaches into her bag and pulls out the journal still in it's wrapping. She sets it in her lap while tugging on the twine.
"Ooh, is that gonna be your Journal for the year? What ki-" Maya stops as Libby unviels the book. The cover was worn brown leather. No fancy ornamentation, no spot to put a name, just plain. She opened it up and both of their jaws dropped. The book was full of notes. Different weird comments about people and things. Some were crossed out, some had if and then statements... She flipped through all of the written pages and eventually the blank ones too. Then there was a message on the inside back cover.
"To my next owner, let your imagination take life."
The girls are startled by sudden burst of clapping. While they were looking at the journal the bleachers had been filled and their class president was now kicking off the assembly. David was a smart guy, but it was really only because he couldn't stand talking in front of people. He spent all of highschool turning in double, triple, or more the amount of word count that was required for speaches because he refused to participate.
"It's kinda sad. He'd probably be more outgoing if he wasn't so small." She says commenting on his scrawny 5'4" stature. Libby pursed her lips thinking on the journal still.
"This thing probably doesn't even work, but wouldn't it be fun if..." Libby says starting to write. "David will grow an inch every time he gets embarrased." She puts down her pencial and watches his speach. To her surprise he's actually keeping his cool quite well.
"Whaat he's sweating. There's no way this journal actually is working, right?" Maya says turning to Libby. "Here let me try." She take the Journal from her and eagerly starts to jot down. "David has the body of a pro bodybuilder."
The moment she puts the period starts a domino affect in the room. All of the staff and students gasp watching the high school boy rip out of his clothes. He stands there nervously shaking with his speech papers in hand. "Sorry, I uh guess puberty c-came late for me." He says leaning into the podium mic.
A guy in the bleachers shouts "Better late than never!" And that's when he started inch by inch. David looked across the see of people, each person's expression just set off his anxiety. It wasn't long before his clothes were tattered ribbons on the floor. Students were starting to either take out their phones or making way to the exit. David completely freaked out and bulldozed himself out the gym through the back wall.
"Why'd you have to do that?" Libby says packing her things and grabbing Maya's arm pulling her along. They raced out through the hole in the wall and followed the giant boy into the sub-division off of school. As they went through the houses towards him they heard the sound of sirens coming their way.
David kept running as far as he could get from the school. The 40 ft tall boy kept running into different people out jogging or walking their dog. He scared the life out of them, but he started running the other way whenever he saw a new onlooker. A line of cop cars had gotten so close he had to detour through the back yards of a row of homes.
"We have to do something or they're going to hurt David, or worse he's going to hurt them." She says dropping her backpack to the ground to pull out the journal. She quickly start to write.
