The Magic Shop

A change in father figures.

...His dad and another man he’d never seen before sitting where his mom had been. Jake studied the photo in confusion. Who was that other man in the picture? But as he studied it further, he realized there was something oddly familiar about him. Something that reminded him of his mother almost.

He was a short, dark-skinned Italian man who looked like he could’ve been his mother’s brother. He had a similar stature as her, and the same bronze skintone, but was hairy all over. He wore only a stained yellow wifebeater and crusty looking boxer shorts, with a noticeably large bulge in the crotch. His torso was thick, and he had a somewhat husky appearance, with a pronounced belly. He had a scraggly beard and was balding at the top. As opposed to his beautiful mother, he seemed a bit like a slob in all honesty, but something about him seemed oddly charming he supposed.

Suddenly he heard a large belch from the living room and looked up, only to suddenly find the man was sitting in their living room now too, exactly where his mother usually sat. He was guzzling a can of beer as he shifted in his seat, letting out another burp as he absentmindedly dug around in his bellybutton for lint. Even stranger than his sudden appearance was when he noticed him watching them. “URRP- Hey son, how’re ya?” He casually belched and said to him as he continued watching TV, reaching his hand down the front of his boxers to scratch his junk, then bringing it back up, apparently to sniff his own fingers. ‘Son’, Jake thought, ‘That couldn’t be right’.

His father, Patrick, soon noticed Jake standing there too, “Hey boyo! Wanna watch TV with yer’ pops and me?” This statement shocked him, “W-Wait, pops?” This got the other man to look toward him, “Yeah, whaddya need sport? Make it quick, cause the games on.” Jake stood in astonishment, this couldn’t be right, but then he thought back to the camera’s inscription, “No way…” He said, looking back down at the camera and photograph in his hands. It couldn’t be possible, could it? “Nate don’t be so hard on the lad. You’re his father after all.” That was when Jake realized it was true. Somehow the camera had transformed his mom into a man. He must’ve had two dads now. His dad, well his other dad now, still seemed to remain the same, a tall, burly Irishman with a thick ginger beard.

“U-Uh, nothing, um, ‘Pops’?” Jake stammered out. ‘Nate’, formerly known as Nancy, just grunted as he turned his attention back to the television, and began picking his nose. He definitely didn’t have his mother’s grace or beauty, much less her manners, and judging by his smell, not her hygiene either. Yet it seemed that he had really replaced his mother. The thought was outlandish, but he couldn’t deny it, especially with the weird inscription on the camera. And if this turned his mom into a man, what would it do to other people he photographed?
