Angela instinctively slammed her hand on an alarm clock. As she came to, the first thing she noticed was the black nail polish on her hands. The more her new life came into focus, the more she realised what kind of life she was getting into.
Her nightgown was black. Her bedsheets were black. The dirty clothes strewn across the floor were black. All across her room were posters of dark metal bands and horror movies. Instinctively, she grabbed a strand of her hair and confirmed that yes, it too was black.
Throwing off her bedsheets, she got up to take a look in the mirror and was surprised that the whole of her hair was dyed black, and there were several scars around her face where she guessed were normally the marks of piercings.
"My god", Angela thought. "I'm a goth."
Suddenly, she heard knocking on her bedroom door.
"Emma, time to get up!" she heard a voice say. Judging by the tone of the voice, Angela guessed it was Emma's mother.
"Uh, already up, mom!" Angela said. "Just give me time to change."
Angela proceeded to pick out her clothes before heading to the bathroom. After her shower, she applied black eyeliner, deep plum lipstick and a few facial piercings, before putting on her chosen outfit - a black pleated dress over a fishnet top, ripped black tights, and black boots. Angela felt a tad silly as she looked herself up and down in the mirror, but she instinctively knew that no one else would recognise that a woman pushing 40 was currently replacing someone else's teenage daughter. "Might as well just kick back and enjoy the ride", thought Angela, as she walked down the stairs to meet her new family.
