Grant was a decent warlock, but he had learned long ago not to meddle with demons, prophecies, and the like. No money in being a matyr. Instead he went into a more profitable occupation, house flipping. Plenty of witches and warlocks died leaving houses full of protective wards, half finished spells, and summoned entities.
And what do you do if you inherit Great Aunt Gertrude's booby trapped townhouse? You deal with it yourself and in all likelihood get turned into a toad or you sell it to Grant on the cheap and let him turn a profit after cleansing it.
Some might call him an oppurtunist and they'd be right. But he was an oppurtunist providing a legitimate service. One that he prided himself on doing properly. And it's not like his job was not without its challenges, his current project for instance was turning out to be a massive pain in the ass.
The modest three bedroom house was sold to him by the son and daughter of the witch who had owned it. It had seemed like a typical hapless set of heirs, who had no idea what would be inside. But he soon learned that the mother was a total control freak. The entire house was covered in enchantments to compel compliance with their mother's rules.
Just getting in the door had required disarming a barrier that only allowed those with the mother's permission to enter then the shoe rack managed to compel him to remove and place his boots.
He let that one slide for now and took it as a sign he needed to be careful. If he got sloppy he could end up stuck under the spells here for a few days before getting free.
Using his small, wooden wand he readied a simple protective ward. That should be enough to protect against future enchantments, but every secomd he had it up and every enchantment it blocked would drain his magic reserves so he couldn’t just use it to barrel through. He might have to let some like the shoe rack fire to maintsin his energy, but as long as he had his wand readied he should be able to stop anything too unpleasant.
Sighing he considered which room to start in...
