Steven was still a bit disoriented from being able to smell and hear everything in the house, but he was increasingly curious about why his ears felt so strange. It wasn't just that they were sensitive. His outer ears felt very puffy but also weirdly limp in a way he didn't recognize. Reaching up to feel them just made them even more bizarre: he could feel the back of his earlobe where he should be feeling his ear hole! Even more confusingly, as his ear got gently pressed between his hand and his face, he could feel the inside of his earlobe touching his cheek. Where in the world were these impossible feelings coming from?
"I've got to go look at my ears," he thought, running to the nearest bathroom with a mirror. (There were at least ten bathrooms in this mansion.)
When he got there, he got the shock of his life. It wasn't just because he could smell everyone who had used that restroom in the last month. It was because of what he saw in the mirror. He had to blink his eyes and look again, because he thought he was seeing things! There, covering his ear holes, were two enormous dangling ears. They were wide enough to cover the sides of his face for the most part. They were so long that they drooped past his jawline by a short distance. They were almost triangular, except for the smooth, round tips they ended in. Except for a bit of wrinkling here and there, they were flat -- the complex inward folds of of his human earlobes were nowhere to be found.
Still not really believing what he was seeing, Steven reached up and felt his left ear again, and then he felt his right. He tugged on them a bit, confused that he could hold his hands beside his lower jaw and feel like he was tugging the tops of his ears. He let go of them and stared into the mirror. Then he shook his head from side to side and felt his ears flap up and down. It felt strange, but not so bad really. He watched the mirror again and noticed that dark brown or possible black fur was growing on them. He also finally noticed how wet his nose was, and how dark the skin had become near his nostrils.
"They look exactly like dog ears," he thought, "but that's not possible, is it?"
He turned his head from side to side to get an even better look at his big droopy ears, and then he started to play with them! He held them in his hands and stretched them wide. He flopped them up over his head, and folded them backward and forward in just about every way he could think of. They were so flat and flexible, they were almost like rubber! And yet he could feel every curve and crease as he bent them. They really did look exactly like dog ears, and he even found that he could perk them up and down like a dog could!
"Heh heh, these are kinda fun!" he laughed to himself. "But how in the world did I get dog ears? Wait, didn't those dice spell out a dog's name when I asked about my own? But -- no, there's no way for dice to do this, is there?"
He realized that the fur was spreading faster on his face and wasn't just on his ears now. Before he could think about this, though ...
