CYOTF (Animal)

End of the road

added by Draemon 17 years ago A

You awaken to a loud wind rustling some leafed trees. It's now late afternoon, six maybe, three hours left of good sunlight. Your belly is still damp and your back feels lik it's been through a clothes dryer. Still you feel a bit reenergized from your nap, and you weren't puking up the fish.

Getting your berrings you resume climbing. On all fours you move steadily in and around the underbrush. In an hour you reach an odd clearing, plenty of small plants but no trees growing in a ten foot channel. This is the logging road all right, but it's so overgrown you can easily wander off it. "Too bad I can't flip a coin", you try to say as you instinctively go for your pants pocket. You are reminded of what you have become as your paw moves over your naked furry thigh. You decide to go in the better lit direction and do so on just your hind legs.

Darkness steadily creeps into the woods and it begins to look like you'll be spending a second night outside. Your improved night vision helps you stay on the road and jump over fallen trees, but if you miss a turn off or sign of a fresher road you might end up walking in circles. It's not really possible to keep your sense of direction by following a winding road through a dark forest.

You keep walking until all traces of the sun are gone. The forest noises are becoming way too familiar as your oversized ears seem to turn towards every little sound. No one has driven down this road in years, was the one you saw from the clearing actually further up the slope than this one? No finding your entry point now, you should've marked it somehow. You're thirsty, and decide to camp out at the next place you find water trickling over the road.

You round a bend and enter a flat clearing. You see your luminescent green eyes stare back at you from an A-frame cabin with prefabricated sheds. Once your heart rate slows back down you approach the cabin. Padlocks secure the sheds and the place looks deserted, there's no tire tracks anywhere, but the place looks like people had used it within the past year. You walk around and check all the doors and windows, locked. You notice a balcony on the cabin's far side, and with the aid of a garbage can climb into it and open a sliding glass door. It opens into a small loft accessing the rest of the cabin with a narrow ladder. Looks like it's all just one room with a pantry and bathroom near the front door. You raid the pantry and find two packs of microwaveable popcorn and a snowmobiling magazine. "At least that explains how people use this place, and I'm probably on private Land". The bathroom has a working sink which you eventually find a way to drink out of. There's no power so you'll just have to explore this place tomorrow. You crash your vulpine body on an old couch and are out like a light.
