“This is crazy.” stated Brandon as he parked the car at the top of a small hill overlooking a cove, there where multiple cars in a spot that is normally abounded or have one or two cars stopped to take a look at the scenery.
“It was your idea.” Countered Helen as she looked at her husband, the love of her life. Then she looked over her shoulder at the small figure in the car seat behind them. “I can’t loss him, can you?”
“No.” answered Brandon as he unbuckled his seat and got out of the car. The car was old and beaten and on the verge of failure. Both he and his wife made slightly above average salary but every penny they made went into the medical care of their son and it wasn’t enough.
He never would forget when the doctors said that there was nothing more that could be done and that they could either let their son die in the hospital or at home. Dying in the ICU of a hospital wasn’t how they wanted their son to die, they didn’t want him to die at all but if he went, they wanted it to be with family and in a place, he knew and loved.
“You got his suit?” inquired Helen as she looked at the bag, it had a few things, mostly food they didn’t know how long it would take to get infected with the virus, but they would wait however long it took.
“Daddy.” Said the five-year-old boy as Brandon picked him up, he was so thin, so light, so weak.
“Don’t worry, Jason we are going for a swim in the ocean, and you will feel all better.” Said Brandon reassuring his son.
“Sounds good.” Said Jason as the five-year-old placed his head against his father not able to hold it upright, the sickness within him eating away at his strength.
“It will be alright, my little pumpkin.” Said Helen as she brushed her son’s hair, as she held a bag in her hands.
Both she and her husband shared a look, this was a crazy move, a desperate move, and an illegal move but to save their son they would do it. The police and other authorities had too much to deal with to contain the virus then to deal with the likes of them, most of the time.
Either way, they would risk it. They would leave the land behind, possibly even their genders behind to save their son and give him life be it as a merman or a mermaid.
“Are you ready?” asked Helen looking at Brandon who nodded. “Let’s go.”
They walked down a small path which led down toward the beach, hidden in a cove they could see other people swimming in the water with merpeople. They could even see some people in the middle of transformation into a merperson.
They reached the bottom and headed toward the beach, wondering what they were supposed to do next.
“Are you Brandon and Helen?” asked a mermaid from the water.
“And our son, Jason.” added Helen as they headed toward the mermaid, they where about to enter the water when the mermaid raised her hand.
“Don’t touch the water, unless you are sure you are ready to become one with the sea.” Advised the mermaid
“We want our son to live.” Said Brandon as Helen nodded before both entering the water, going up to their waste before sitting down so the water went up to their chest.
“You poor little thing.” Said the mermaid with concern in her voice and care in her hand as she placed her hand on the little boy’s face, he opened his eyes but closed them again he was too weak. “Let’s hope we can make you better.”
“Hope?” inquired Brandon
“Sometimes it is just too late and sometimes a person seams to be immune to the virus.” Stated the mermaid who seamed to be running the show. “We have options if he seams to be immune but let’s save those.”
“What happens now?” inquired Helen
“We wait…sometimes just a touch is enough, I will tell other mermaids and merman to come around to make sure he is exposed as much as possible.” Stated the mermaid “If that doesn’t work we will have to do other options depending on what happens with you two.”
“Alright.” Said Brandon as he held his son in his arms while his wife placed her head on his shoulder. It was a waiting game now to see who got infected first.
