Ryan’s heartbeat was in his chest as he moved down the rough trail down to the cove at located near just off a major highway. He had left a note in his car to his family should/when it was found. With so many of the police officers either dealing with those infected with the mermaid virus or coming down with it themselves things like an abounded car was glossed over.
When he had parked, he had seen a few dozen cars in the large parking lot of what looked to be some kind of long abounded drive in movie theater. None of that mattered anymore.
He moved down the path heading toward the ocean water. It wasn’t any easy path but with luck he wouldn’t have to make the journey back anyhow.
Finally, he reached the bottom to find the gentle crashing waves of a very isolated beach. It was a mixture of sand and pebbles but with the large cliffs surrounding 3 sides it was a rather impressive place.
“Alright, here I go.” Said Ryan as he moved down the beach following the instructions he had been given over the internet chat room. He moved past some abounded articles of clothing and some other items one would normally bring to the beach. He knew that they where likely left behind by those people who like him had come down here to leave humanity behind.
Finally, he reached the end of the beach and found an opening to a cave, he walked in a few feet. It wasn’t that big of a cave and in fact calling it a cave may have been giving it too much credit. It was maybe 20 or 25 ft deep and about half that in width. The cave rock was polished smooth by constant waves crashing into it and he could spot more abounded cloths and items pushed to the far back wall.
“Alright.” Said Ryan as he sat down at the water’s edge at the back of the cave and pulled out three glowsticks, the colors he was supposed to bring and he dropped them into the water and then he waited.
He should have been married by now…he should have been enjoying himself with his wife Elena but she had come down with the mermaid virus only a week before their wedding. The CDC doctors had taken her away before they could say goodbye and since they weren’t married yet by law he wasn’t allowed to get any information about her. Since she was an orphan raised by the state, she had no family that he could talk to, to find out what happened. With the world near a panic no one was interested in helping a man find his infected wife.
That is why he turned to the dark web, for a good amount of money he was put into contact with someone who could arrange a meeting with a mermaid/merman to become infected and for even more money they could arrange for certain merpeople to meet him. He had dumped most of what he had to arrange this. The glow sticks in the water told any merperson that someone was here waiting, and the color combination told the love of his life that he was here waiting for her to come and infected him so that they could be together.
So he waited, he sat and waited for his love to come for him.
He didn’t have to wait too long before he spotted a figure in the water, it was too far away to see who it was or make out any details but some how he knew it was Elena and she was coming. He prepared himself as the water before him broke as Elena appeared.
