Jacob exhaled the cool morning air. The smell of dew and astroturf filled his lungs. He walked around the 400 meter track that surrounded his college's football field. Jacob has been developing a habit. He wanted to walk a mile every morning and walking around the campus' track & field stadium was the closest place.
There where others going about their daily routines, too. An older lady was taking her two, golden labradors for a walk. There was a young couple sharing each other's company up in the bleachers. In the center of the field, about a dozen-or-so young cheerleaders practiced their routine.
Jacob had been walking laps in the morning for months. The only times when he missed a day was when it was raining or he was out-of-town. However, something in the air felt different today. There was something malicious hanging in the breeze. Jacob looked to the horizon and saw a malignant red wave of translucent energy over taken the sky. He turned to run. But, it was too late for him, the cheerleaders, the dogwalker, and the whole of society. The Great Fusion Wave had arrived.
