Maria's church had frowned on Halloween, finding it demonic. She grew up thinking it was an evil holiday.
She was having trouble seeing anything demonic though about Elizabeth's kids, still dressed in their cute dinosaur costumes munching on their trick or treat candy as the two sisters played a video game together.
They both seemed so well adjusted and happy. More than Maria had ever been at their age, that's for sure.
Maria wondered to herself what they thought about their parents divorce, but she didn't want to intrude on their lives, so she didn't ask, preferring just to watch over them as Elizabeth prepared supper.
"Do you want some, Auntie Maria?" Billie asked, turning around, handing her a tiny fistful of fun sized candy.
"Um...sure" Maria said with a tiny smile from the couch, accepting the candy into her weather beaten hands. "Thank you, dear."
Billie smiled and turned back to her game.
She liked her mom's new girlfriend.
She'd never beat Billie's real mom, but maybe there was enough room for Maria in the family too.
