Kat finished driving home. It was getting late and the taxidermist was closed. They would be open again in the morning, and she'd drop off the deer head then. She just left it in the bag on her car floor for the night. It was cool outside, so it would be alright. She went inside and visited with her parents, updating them on how well things were going with Jack, how she thought he might be "the one," and so on. She told them about how nice his parents were and how she liked them too.
After a nice visit, Kat went up to her room and changed... Then went into her nice cozy study that she knew would have been Dan's room, if he had ever been born. She decided that she was rather proud of herself for the improvements she'd made in her life. And the more she thought of "might have been" Dan as nothing more than a deer carcass and a head that would become a decoration on her (hopefully) future mother-in-law's dining room wall, the less it bothered her.
About a month later, Sarah got a call that her deer head was mounted and ready for pickup. Since the taxidermist was near Kat's house, she paid over the phone and asked Kat if she wouldn't mind bringing it when she came over for dinner.
Kat arrived for dinner, carrying Dan's mounted head. Of course, he still had no consciousness due to the spell. He wouldn't awaken until he was hanging on the wall.
When Dan came to, it felt to him like only a second had passed since Kat was talking to him through the garbage bag in her car. It was very disorienting, from his perspective. One second, he was in that bag, and the next second he was looking eye-to-eye with Steve. Steve was right in front of Dan's face, looking straight at him as he spoke loudly, "Sarah? Sarah, how does this look? Do you like it here?" Sarah answered, "Yes, babe. Looks fine. Thank you. Now please help me get dinner ready."
As Steve walked away to help Sarah, Dan kind of just took a few moments to take everything in. His head was mounted and hanging on the dining room wall, and he could oversee quite a lot. He saw Jack and Kat visiting at the table. he saw Steve and Sarah over in the kitchen, starting to prepare dinner, and he thought to himself "So this is what I've been reduced to? I'm just a wall decoration?"
And he was right. Of course, until his meat in the freezer ran out, he would also be food for a great many dinners.
Dan studied what he could see in more detail. He noticed a few photos on a shelf across the room. and saw himself in some of them. This was his first time to see what he looked like as a deer. He saw himself laying on the ground after Sarah had shot him. He saw a photo of Sarah smiling as she held his head by the antlers. He saw himself hanging upside down in the garage, with Sarah posing next to him for a photo.
Then he heard Jack, "Hey Mom, what's for dinner anyway?" "Well, we're having a venison roast, sound good?" "Sounds great!" came the reply. Steve asked Kat, "Kat, while we're waiting for dinner, would you like to try a piece of the venison jerky I had made?" "Oh, yes, please!" she answered, and said "Thank you very much," as he handed her a piece.
"Kat?" said Sarah, "What do you think? That head turned out pretty good, huh?" "Yes," answered Kat, "that place does great work. And you're right, it looks beautiful on your wall here." Kat stood and walked up to Dan's head as she chewed on her piece of jerkey. She stopped right in front of his face, intentionally chewing with her mouth slightly open, and said, "Yes, beautiful deer. And quite tasty too!" She looked Dan straight in the eyes and smacked her lips, then returned to the table. Dan was repulsed.
