James had never much liked the idea of living with strangers. However, having just come out of a long term relationship and with money being tight in the current financial climate he didn't really have much choice. After looking around for a while he had found the best option for him, on paper at least, was to take a room in a house otherwise occupied by three older women who were apparently sisters.
James had not met the sisters, and this might not have been his ideal scenario, but the price was right and the property, though a little way out of town and in a very old building, was spacious and well maintained. He figured the three old women would probably keep themselves to themselves and be quiet and considerate housemates. In order to get the property James had needed to empty his savings and pay six months rent up front. It didn't leave much room for error, but it worked out much cheaper in the long run than paying monthly elsewhere.
Having knocked on the door, James could hear three pairs of footsteps hurrying down the stairs at once to meet him, then the door swung open to reveal three women who looked to be in their seventies. They were each dressed in black and had a similar look, with long flowing white hair and noticeably sparkling blue eyes.
"Ah, you must be James we've been waiting for you, please come in!" the woman at the front smiled "I'm Hilda and these are my younger twin sisters Gilda and Matilda"
"Handsome isn't he?" Gilda grinned to her sisters "Tall and dark haired, slim and well toned. Just how I like 'em!" .
James felt a little uncomfortable at being sized up so openly like that, but figured there was no real harm in it.
"So what?" Matilda huffed "We don't need a stranger living here with us. Spying on our business"
"Don't mind them!" Hilda ushered James into the house eagerly "Please come through and make yourself at home!".
Inside the house was not like James had expected, the place was full of strange, old looking trinkets, dusty tomes and bottles filled with different coloured liquids while there were strange markings all over the walls and floor, often featuring stars and moons.
"Never shared a house with witches before, have you?" Hilda grinned noticing her new housemates confused reaction to the place.
"You're witches?" James asked figuring these women were even more eccentric than they had first appeared.
"Oh yes, you will soon find that out dear!" Gilda cackled, shooting her twin a knowing glance.
"Welcome to the house!" Hilda smiled as she shut the door behind James and seemed to make it lock without even touching it "I'm sure we will enjoy having you here!"
