I was woken early by Mum. Knocking on my door she told me “Get up Sam. You have to be at school by 7.30. Unfortunately I have been called in for the breakfast shift so can’t give you a lift. You and Mary will have to walk’
I looked at my clock and groaned. It was only 5.30 I had got used to sleeping in during the holidays. ‘Ok Mum’ I called out. ‘I’ll be up in a minute’
‘Sam? Somethings wrong with my hearing. You sound just like your sister’ Oh hell I had forgotten to deepen my voice.
‘Sorry Mum I had a frog in my throat’ I deepened my voice this time.
Mum was leaving as I went to breakfast in my dressing gown. Mary was already up and showered, wearing the pale blue school polo and matching pleated skirt. We had bought 2nd hand uniforms at the school retail outlet when Mum first enrolled us. I had some polo shirts and some long sleeved shirts. I would be wearing long sleeves and long trousers for the next few weeks. ‘I’ve left the enrolment paperwork with Mary. You will need to deliver it to the school office 1st thing this morning. It’s all filled in and signed. Unfortunately I’m going to be at the Café till late tonight, Sue and Desley have both called in sick’ Mum gave me a kiss on the forehead and left.
As soon as she had gone. Mary said to me ‘I have a spare skirt if you want to go to school ala fem’
‘Get lost’ I said.
‘Come on admit it. You enjoyed being Samantha’
‘I did not. It’s disgusting being a girl. I have to sit down to pee’
‘Well get used to it. 24 more days little Sis’
‘I’m not your little sister. I’m older and taller than you’
‘You admit your my sister and I am bigger where it counts’ She pointed at her breasts.
‘I hope you rot in hell for what you are doing to me’
‘Now who’s the little princess’ She snickered.
I lost my temper and threw the glass of orange juice I had just poured for myself at her. It went all over the blue skirt she was wearing.
‘Aargh! Look what you have done you idiot! I hate you!’ She snatched up a satchel from the bench and stormed off to her room.
I ate my cereal in peace. Then showered and carefully dressed. I was satisfied that the long loose shirt over the baggy trousers hid my sex. I had to wear 3 pairs of socks to make my shoes fit comfortably. A look in the bathroom mirror showed an androgynous teenager. I really wished I had my facial hair, as little as it was, back. I just had to remember to speak in a deep voice.
Mary had changed to a clean dress by the time I was out. She stared at me with daggers in her eyes. ‘I don’t know what your smirking about Samantha. You will be the one washing that stain out tonight’
‘It’s worth it’
‘I’m going. See you at school’ she left.
It was only 6.40. I estimated it was a 20 minute walk to school. I was happy to not have to walk with her. I turned on the TV.
