LARP takes on new meaning

added 9 months ago O

Rowan set her stuff on the long table that had been set up in the basement living room. As she did this, Dennis and Tristan did the same with their books, papers, writing utensils and, in the case of Dennis, the bag he'd packed for the weekend. Their talk about the campaign and what they hoped to accomplish and how long they’d have to wait for the two others to log-in, Rowan took out her laptop, placed it on the table and flipped open the lid. Dennis asking, "You're mom still going to order us pizza later," to which Tristan affirmed, she booted it up and logged into her screen as they talked about toppings.

"Be right back," she told the two and scooping up the bag that had her pyjamas and extra clothes for the weekend, along with anything personal she might need, the teenage girl left the room, her mind on whether her memories had been altered with what the programme had done and if she was recalling correctly on where she usually slept when she was over as Tristan's place.

In need of several supplemental materials for the campaign, and knowing he could find them on Rowan's laptop, Dennis didn't feel the need to ask if he could use the computer. His friend having always allowed him, he headed over to where she'd left it, and about to open one of the three folders marked "D&D" he stopped when he spotted an icon on the desktop he'd never seen. Having never been a snoop, he was sure he should leave it alone, but curious about it, he doubled clicked on the icon marked "Chronivac". Humming softly to itself, the laptop launched it, and Dennis stared at first in confusion at what he saw.

Information printed told him what sort of computer programme it was, and he wondered why Rowan had it. Thinking it might be some sort of new character generator the girl was playing with, as, of the three of them, she was usually the first to try something new for Dungeons and Dragons, with the two extras that gamed via Face-Time with them not far behind, which Dennis figured was understandable, as Rowan and Marcus would often trade off on who was the DM for the session. Seeing his friend already had a saved folder, he ignored it and instead clicked on the option to scan and create another profile. Wondering if he'd need the external camera and printer, Dennis gasped audibly enough to get Tristan's attention when the readout on the screen started to show him detailed statistics about himself.

"What is it?" the other asked as he wandered over, and not sure what to tell him, Dennis commented after a bit, "I think Rowan's got a new programme to create LARP characters," as he dropped down boxes, double-clicked and right-clicked over sub-menus.

Next to him, Tristan studied the information. Seeing their was some real private stuff displayed, he frowned and asked, "Why does she have a detailed profile you on her laptop? She doesn't have anything on me, does she?"

"The programme created it when it scanned me."

"Scanned?"

A nod of his friend, and Dennis explained what had happened when he'd double-clicked on the icon and opened the programme. The two staring at the display a little longer, it was Dennis who finally said, "So, should we wait for Rowan to come back and explain this, what was it called, Chronivac? Or do you think we should try it?”

Tristan wasn’t sure. On the one hand, like Dennis, he didn’t like snooping in other people’s stuff. Believing Rowan wouldn’t appreciate it, he found he didn’t want to alienate the one girl who actually hung around with them. Yet, on the other hand, he didn’t think she’d mind, as it looked like it was for Dungeons and Dragons, and she’d told them a number of times that anything gaming material she had stored on her laptop they could access if they needed when the computer was on. Deliberating over both sides of the argument, Tristan eventually settled on that Rowan probably wouldn’t mind in the long run.

A casual shrug, and he settled on the answer of, “I don’t think she’d mind if we played around with it. If she asks, we’ll just say we found the programme accidentally when we went looking for other D&D stuff.

This was pretty much the truth, and Dennis nodded in agreement. Glancing at his profile, reading the stuff displayed, he soon asked, “What do you think I should change? Or do you want to try?”
