The lands of Change are special. Like any other fantasy setting, this world has its kingdoms of elves, dwarves, men, and other races. The combat prowess of warriors legendary, the magic of spellcasters destructive and powerful, and skill of rogues unreal at the highest levels. Monsters are plentiful, ambitious evils always arising, and armies clashing can be as plentiful as small scale skirmishes of adventurers and those who would try to stop them. Even deities and related entities are known and worship accordingly. But the lands of Change are special.
Change is named so because its peculiarities with transformations. History has it that a very powerful wizard obsessed with transmutations made his home somewhere in Change, and decided to unleash magic on the surrounding lands to represent his interests in a literal way. The result is many things in the land of Change could easily result in one being changed or modified. Although many monsters, traps, and generally bad entities can be lethal in typical ways, it is no surprise to find one's self transformed by those same entities. Change has existed for as long as some kingdoms in the world, and seemed to never have a shortage of adventuring opportunities. As for the wizard himself, no one knows what happened with him, and most just theorize him being a victim of his own magic.
How do transformations happen in Change? Traps and many cursed or unidentified items are the most common causes of transformation and may not be limited by theme. Transformations according to the current area or entities often happen. Transformations via an enemy's magic, poison, or even bodily liquids or sex are also noted routes. Really, many ways can lead to transformations, and sometimes even the lands themselves can change but this is much rarer. The result are many biomes can exist in the land of Change.
What kind of transformations can happen? Can be as small as a change in one's eye color, to one being turned into a giant tree, and anywhere in between. Although there can be themes to transformations, it is common enough that many adventurers can find themselves a cow during one adventure and grown muscles after that. Transformations can easily be temporary as they are permanent. Luckily, very rarely will victims of Change find themselves completely mentally transformed as they are physically, and being a veteran in Change can help see various benefits to being transformed, but it is always warned of Going Native within Change, which may as well be death to most.
So do people have the lands of Change figured out? No, but there is a sizable town named Morphia maintained and ruled independently out of practical needs and often as a place of retirement for those transformed beyond ability or other reasons to stay transformed. Its in one of the more temperate and stable areas of Change, and the services of Morphia reflect the many years of adventuring and documentation of Change.
Morphia has the services of any large town, but what sets its apart is dealing with the transformations of the victims. Examining the nature of one's transformations, seeing if they can be reversed and costs needed. Custom lodgings and equipment for those who stay with more exotic forms, or cannot afford to get changed back. And because transformations are so common, it is common to see someone talking with a horse without batting an eye, well they might do a double-take if the horse retained normal speech. As well, anyone who specializes in transmutation magic or related abilities will find their talents favored in Change...
So Morphia is the beachhead at which adventurers try to to find their riches, glory, or other motivations for coming to the lands of Change. Who do we, the readers, look at now?
