CYOTF

More to his uncle's store than meets the eye.

added 7 months ago O Mental

Once the curiosity of the bizarre wore off Jake realized he found the theme off putting. He liked his manhood, and though he felt he left a little to be desired, he liked being masculine too. Several book series dedicated to ripping that away from someone was just disturbing... to him the story was horror not a fantasy fulfillment "but, not everyone feels the same way about that I do, I need to remember that... " he said to himself out loud, chastising himself for trying to apply his emotions to things that he is not the audience for. "But if he has a section like this, he surely has one more suited to me... unless this is his thing."

He set the book down and wandered out of the aisle craving something masculine affirming. He came across a display case filled with knives resting atop their belt sheaths, pocket watches, straight edge razors, and top hats. On top of the display case he found a small collection of pipes, being 16 he wasn't going to get another chance to play with one for 5 years or more... He put it in his mouth and tried to let it hang from his lips almost dropping it, then he bit down on the bit and made faces in the mirror and pretended to puff on it. Then he stared in the mirror, took the pipe from his mouth and used it to point as he said in his most refined voice, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn." Putting the pipe back in his mouth as though it belonged there without a second thought.

He wandered deeper into the aisle finding the oddest trinkets from various work places... there was a section labeled Mechanics with rags, forehead lights, tools and pieces thereof. The section labeled Handyman had a variety of chewed and unchewed pencils, tape measures, levels and flashlights. The aisle had sections going through the gambit of jobs with small articles to represent each. A stapler from a lawyers office, a shoestring from a firefighter, a military pin from a marine...

As he neared the end of the aisle the labels shifted from professions to hobbies, visual arts, motorcyclist, musician, survivalist, surfer, skier, and many more. As he peered closely at some of the items he exhaled heavily and a thick cloud of smoke billowed from his lungs. Jake jumped back in shock and realized he still had the pipe in his mouth and had been going through the motions as if he was smoking it. He pulled it out and verified it was empty and not lit, but the smell of tobacco smoke lingered in the air, in his lungs, and he could taste it in his mouth... More than a little freaked out he very consciously took the pipe back to its rack and set it down.

Getting the sense for the first time that this place might actually be weirder than first glance would suggest, which IS quite weird, he took a step back to the front of the store and looked over everything again with a fresh set of eyes trying to get the big picture.
