The roar of a low flying jet followed moments later by the sounds of explosions and the ground shaking nearby decided it for Tim and Susan as they slithered toward the entrees which lead into the series of massive tunnels which crisscrossed around the city.
The two of them weren’t the only ones who followed the formal humans man into the darkness but still a good amount of people did decide to head down the subway tunnels instead.
It was like stepping or rather slithering into a different world, the walls where covered with graffiti and signs of trash as the tunnels where a common place for the city’s homeless population to live. Some of the walls where now covered with blood and the remains of tents. Shopping carts where knocked over and there was even signs that the transformation of people down here happened a while ago.
The area was almost pitch black with only a few emergency lights every couple hundred fit and most of them where dull and near the point of being burnt out.
Still neither Tim nor Susan had any problems seeing, it was like a type of night vision crossed with heat vision. Both Susan and Susan could see the heat coming off each of the others creatures in this company heading down the tunnels. Each breath they released sent a small cloud of heat into the air that told both of them where they were. On top of that they could see almost as well as they could see in the day light, true they couldn’t see any real colors but everything was in a shade of grey.
They moved along heading down the tunnels, there had to be at least 40 or 50 of them. All different types of creatures. There where you feline types, your wolf/fox types and horses/deers but there was also a some snakes/lizards like Susan and Tim. There was tension between the groups and everyone seamed to be borderline ready to fight if someone decided to make a move but none did.
Finally after a few hours they reached the end of the tunnels which ran under the city and toward a long open channel which ran beside one of the major highways leading out of the city.
The sounds of multiple car horns and the like filled the air, as well as helicopters and the roar of jets, but no gunfire. It was dark but the to their right they could see streetlights illuminating the nearby highway.
“Head into the hills.” Ordered the turtle man who had been the guild. “More are coming behind us and we don’t want this blocked. Do not attack the highway until your away from this spot.”
“Understood.” said a wolf man as he lead his pack, which consist of himself and what was likely his wife and a little boy who had to be no older then 8 out and towards the tree covered hill. Everyone tensed up and watched as they ran up the hill and disappeared into the woods.
“Time to go.” Said Tim and he and Susan began to slither up the hill, they where not as fast as the wolves and the others who had traveled with them down the tunnel and out of the city but no one yelled out and no shots ran out as both of them reached the tree line.
They kept going heading up the hill finally reaching a small piece of flat ground which gave them a great view of the city through the trees.
The city was on fire, a few of the skyscrapers where now totally on fire and one looked like it may have even fallen but it was hard to know for sure thanks to all the smoke. It reminded both of them of a scene from either a zombie movie or an alien attack movie where a city is about to fall to the enemy. They watched as a group of attack helicopters made a run at something downtown, then they watched as one of those choppers went into the side of a building.
They could also see a line of military vehicles blocking the highway a few miles away from them towards the city. Infront of that was a massive group of cars all attempting to get out but only a few cars were being allowed to leave at any one time. More army vehicles where on the highway nearby heading into the city even as more people attempted to get away. An attempt to hold the virus in check and prevent it’s spread…too bad the virus was already past their attempts to contain it.
