Bill and Joanna, now a happy couple due to the mysterious magical Stone that had appeared on Bill's porch hardly an hour ago, walked hand in hand down the hallway of the high school. All of Bill's problems, at least those that were actually problems, seemed dealt with in the best way possible and the stresses the teen had felt melted away as the stupid grin on his face grew wider. And Joanna had no recollection of who she used to be, only that she was beautiful and strong, smart, rich, popular and wonderfully in love with Bill.
It was a happy ending, or so it seemed.
But the Ahn'Ger Stone, or perhaps whatever power that had guided it into the Human reality, was not content with happiness. As it could only be activated with anger, with hate, it needed those emotions, perhaps to survive, perhaps simply out of 'hunger' or a need to sow chaos and now the weave of reality was being manipulated by it, ever so slightly, in order to find or cause a reason for the Stone to be used once more.
Bill's backpack jostled as he spent his day at school, going to classes, walking down the hall, making out with Joanna, all these motions causing the Stone to shake loose from it's spot in the backpack and slide towards a worn out corner that BIll had never noticed was forming in the wall worn fibers. A nudge here, a rub there, the Stone's edges slowly, and passively tore a hole through the backpack's surface and without a sound, slipped out onto the cold tile of Shermer High as Bill and his new love continued on their way, drunk in love and utterly oblivious to what had just occurred.
And there the Stone laid unnoticed until a chance beam of light made the gemstone shine brightly, drawing the attention of it's new owner, who had just had a very bad day.
