"Can I sit here?" At first Christina didn't recognize the person at the crowded food court. Then she realized.
"Jack? The Sex-Change fairy got you too?"
"Yeah" said the still basically man-shaped person with growing breasts. "So much for the football scholarship." (That was a joke--pre-change Jack had been a nerd, not a jock.)
"It really sucks, doesn't it?"
"It's the worst" Jack agreed. "My parents want to send me to Christian Girl Camp."
"I hear you. My family wants me to go to a man camp."
"Let me guess. Camp Heteronormative."
"You got it. Supposedly turns you into John Wayne only more sexist."
"Christian Girl Camp is all 'it's God's will that your son is now a girl, and we'll ensure that she becomes a good Christian wife and mother.' If you can believe the brochures, 98% of the grads are married in five years, and 98% of those are married mothers within seven."
"What are you going to do?"
"I don't know. I keep telling myself I should resist this, but I just don't know if I have the strength. I mean, its going to be tough enough just dealing with periods, right?" Jack gave a wan smile.
Christina grimaced. "That's one consolation for me I guess. It would have been nice to be a mother, though."
The two finished their meals in silence, each contemplating their futures with sadness. What kind of person will I be when this is over?
