Witness Protection as Flies: Crime Recon

added 6 months ago A S TG O Insect

The usual check-in with Marshal Bob happened, but this time he wanted to test you and Samantha to try some light spying. Bob had access to local police reports on crime activity, and wanted to see if you could investigate and report on any of it. He emphasized that this wasn't a formal request and that it was up to you how to handle it, and to only check-in as usual rather then immediately, even during an emergency crime. You were still witnesses, but based on your past reports and experiences, he was curious how you would do with some recon.

You and Samantha were eager to investigate. It already was a fun and regular activity to eavesdrop on people, but now you have missions to play with! Still, you both decided to play it safe as usual, and do your investigations together when possible. It was also weird to investigate, as the police reports Bob talked about were more trends than active crime. You only communicated a few times, and actively communicating would risk blowing your cover at being flies. You just needed to see if you could confirm the crime trends.

You went to certain areas around your hotel and paid attention to things that matched the trends. Once again your House Fly senses weren't helping when maintaining a distance from someone or somewhere, but you and Samantha used your past experiences to get up close as needed and almost effortlessly. You had an idea of when a person could hear your buzzing as a fly, but you were pros at this point moving along surfaces as well.

Eventually, and later towards sunset, you found two men meeting in an suspected drug dealing point. Of course you couldn't make out the details of what they looked like from a distance, much less what they were talking about, so you and Samantha moved up as you could. You weren't detected, and after the "exchange" was done, you and Samantha compared notes on what happened. You both than realized that you should've followed them, but this was a part of the learning experience and that would be too adventurous for a 1st attempt at snooping around.

Soon you and Samantha got into the habit and experience of finding and observing criminal activity. There were the activities from Bob's police reports, but you also got an eye for noticing more suspicious things happening. Doing this also helped develop your skills at being flies, especially since you actually care more for what suspected criminals looked liked and what they were talking about. When you did start tailing them, you tried to pay attention if they had any documentation, especially for IDing them. Samantha even came up with a strategy to pay attention if they came in certain vehicles, getting the license plates, and squirming in them in possible for anything suspicious.

Overall you two still played it safe and didn't try to follow suspects too far or into certain areas. It was enjoyable, and gave more meaning to doing things as flies compared to the semi-random exploration of before. From the check-ins with Bob, he said he couldn't exactly report what you found either, but you gave more credit that the transformation tech could have various practical uses, including crime fighting and espionage. You and Sam were happy to help, and proceeded to continue having your usual fun as House Flies as well being casual informants.
