The girl’s bedroom was a good indication of its inhabitant’s nature. A poster of Katherine Johnson hung prominently over her bed, with it being flanked by posters of Ada Lovelace and Marie Curie. A few report cards hung on the adjacent walls, sporting almost straight 100s in anything relating to math, science, or engineering, and low Cs in anything else. A whiteboard and a box filled with a mess of electronic parts, along with VEX robots, lined the wall facing the bed, almost covering her closet entrance and the exit.

Rebecca Reynolds’s fist came crashing down on her alarm clock. The thing had been through it so many times it was just a few mornings from falling to pieces like in a damn cartoon. Drifting in and out of consciousness, she then realized what day it was. She jumped straight up and ran to the calendar behind the board. She looked for today’s date, and finally found what it was.
