Chloe just sat there stunned as she looked at the yellows, oranges and pure white scales which had once been her flesh. Before her stretched out was instead of her legs was a mermaid tail. She turned her gaze toward her husband to see, that his tail was slightly different but his scales where a mixture of Blues, greens and blacks. Pressed up against her chest was her very scared son, his tail looked like his father’s but instead of the same colors as his father, his was a mixture of Blues and black scales from his father and some white with a few orange from her.
Her brain was still trying to process what had happened, then she noticed that the end of her tail was splitting apart as her normal human feet returned. She watched in a mixture of relief and strangely some disappointed, the tail was rather beautiful as her human legs returned. She turned her eyes back to her husband and son only to see their human legs returning as well as the other strange changes which had happened
Chloe’s and Nathan’s ears turned back to normal, all three had their hair return to normal and so did the other improvements.
Finally, they all sat, nude from the waist down in the sand, but human once again.
“Ok…Nathan cover your eyes.” Ordered his father, he didn’t want his son to see either himself or his mother nude from the waste down.
A mad rush took place as all three rushed back to their stuff, lucky Chloe had packed an extra swimsuit for Nathan and she slipped on her jean shorts as her husband put on his own shorts.
“Ok…what just happened?” inquired Luke
“I don’t know.” Answered Chloe as she looked down at the baby still giggling happily in her arms, the baby…a girl was just as human as any baby she had seen. “Maybe we were imagining it.”
She knew Luke didn’t believe her; she didn’t fully believe herself
“Call the police, I’ll pick up what remains of our cloths from over there.” answered Chloe
“And tell them what?” inquired Luke
“We found a baby.” answered Chloe “Who will believe us, if we say we found a merbaby.”
A beach day was totally ruined as multiple police cars and an ambulance quickly arrived at the beach.
The police talked to all three of them, none of them said a thing about the little baby girl they found had been a mermaid. The moment a paramedic tried to take the little girl away from Chloe she let out a horrible cry and Chloe and Luke winced a bit, not from hearing the sound but from the idea of handing his girl over. Unknown to them, a magical bound was already attached to them.
Finally when it was all done, all the interviews done, a paramedic took the screaming little girl toward the nearest hospital
“Let’s go home.” Said Luke as they all got back into their car and left the beach even as the police still kept looking around for any sign of who the mother or father of this baby was and what happened to them.
It was a quiet drive back to their house.
“Mom…Dad…what happened back there?” inquired Nathan as they pulled into the garage and turned off the engine.
“I don’t know.” Answered Chloe
“Maybe we were imagining it.” Offered Luke, but it felt wrong to him even as he said it.
“Felt real to me…it was scary but I did like the colors of my tail.” stated Nathan
“Well you can imagine yourself with a tail, while you take your bath, now go get in the tube while I get supper started.” Ordered Chloe as Nathan ran off leaving his mother and father alone in the kitchen.
“That was no dream.” stated Luke
“I know…but what was it? Mermaids are not real.” Countered Chloe,
“You did look hot as a mermaid.” Laughed Luke trying to lighten the mood.
“Same to you, you handsome merman you.” Joked Chloe, but something felt off, she couldn’t help but feel like a piece was missing, it felt almost like the first couple of times she and Luke had dropped off Nathan off at babysitter/grandparents for a date night, like a piece was missing.
“You are thinking about the baby girl?” inquired Luke as Chloe nodded, that was what she was thinking about.
“Mermaids aren’t real.” restated Chloe unaware just as her husband and son was of the small patch of scales each of them had now somewhere on their legs.
