"Things changed..." she said. "Need to see...hard to talk." She wasn't trying to talk like a caveman in a movie...she just had trouble forcing words out amidst the panting and using vocal chords that clearly preferred other noises.
"Okay, Roxanne," the beagle said. "You aren't imagining this...you aren't high..."
_Yeah,_ Madison thought. _She's the one who thinks she is imagining this?_ She could still see Ethan wandering around the room. He was much bigger than she was now, and had this glazed dumb and happy look on his face, smiling, his tongue hanging out, drooling a bit...and his forehead seemed a lot smaller, sloping backward above his bushy earbrows. "Not high...show me what is happening."
"Yeah, like I should believe you." She attached a leash to Madison's collar. "You want to go for a walk, fine...but after that..."
The shelter looked very similar, although the posters had a lot of smiling blank human faces on them.
