The mirrors were all uniform in shape, but oddly Marcia struggled to name that shape. The more she looked at them, her eyes just glided along, struggling to see the edges of the glass. The mirrors were edges with different things all around them, in perfect...circles? Squares? Why couldn't she figure out what shape she was seeing?
Marcia first moved on to a mirror framed with kudzu. Vines of kudzu, wrapped into a rope of green, framing the glass and seemingly without a beginning or end. Looking into the mirror, Marcia did not see herself. She saw a wall of green and brown, with beams of sunlight filtering from above. It took a minute for her to recognize it as a forest.
"I can't see anything but trees." Marcia said. Christine came up beside her without a word. "I figured I'd see an alternate version of myself. She raised a hand.
"I think you can see something else." Christine said. "Just look." Marcia focused. And she finally saw it. On a branch, a mass of red, brown and black spots? A bird, now raising a wing in motion with Marcia's hand. Christine smiled. "You have found yourself." Marcia didn't respond. She moved on to the next mirror. "Marcia? Don't look too long into the mirror's, they pull at you."
Marcia stopped at the second glass, this one framed with bones. Christine had mentioned this one earlier. Marcia saw herself right away. Herself on all fours, panting happily, wearing a dog collar. Otherwise she was nude. Marcia locked eyes with her smaller self. Christine said something else, but Marcia didn't hear it. Blood was rushing through her ears.
Marcia moved on to a third mirror, this one framed by golden silk rope. And as she stepped in front of it, so too did a tall man. He had a cartoonishly puffy chest, covered in a blue jacket that looked like a military uniform. A golden cord crossed his chest. Marcia looked up at him, seeing a man with short gray hair and an amazing white mustache. He looked at her through pince-nez glasses.
"Marcia!" Christine pulled the woman away from the glass. Marcia blinked. "Are you okay? You shouldn't look into other worlds for too long."
"Fine, I'm fine." Marcia mumbled. "I know that..." Her mouth spoke, but her eyes wandered. She looked at the glasses and focused on one. An urge told her to walk through it. Move through the portal, leave this world.
