The Scene of the Crime

added by Jack the Lizard 5 months ago A Mental Canine

A few minutes later a call came over the radio. Jack barely noticed, his face was pressed against the window. Everywhere, as far as he could see, were dogs walking on two legs. No one seemed confused, no one seemed surprised. For everyone else, this seemed normal.

𝘐𝘵'𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘻𝘺. Jack's nose kept trembling as he searched for scents through the glass. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘢𝘮 𝘐 𝘵𝘳𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘯𝘪𝘧𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴? 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵'𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢 𝘥𝘰𝘨 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴! 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘢 𝘨𝘰𝘥𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘯 𝘥𝘰𝘨. They drove past a park and Jack could see a human woman and man chasing each other, while a little kid was being pet by an adult dog.

Jack's mind now flashed with new images. He was in a cage, with his brother's and sisters, all yapping and wagging their butts. Jack had been pulled out and told he was going to be a police human. He had come from a breeder....no focus! He didn't have a breeder, he had a mother and a father and...what did they look like?

The car soon arrived at the crest of a hill, off of the highway. Ann got out and quickly pulled Roger out. They trundled down the hill, finding a wrecked SUV at the bottom. It lay on all four wheels, right on the edge of the forest. It was mostly black, with a shattered front side and a compressed top. All of the windows were shattered and the engine looked like it had burned. The passenger side door was wide open, the driver's side crushed completely. A bunch of dogs in police uniforms looked up as the two approached.

"I heard about it on the radio, what do we know?" Ann asked.

"The car is registered to a Mrs. Victoria Clay," A golden retriever said. He was holding a piece of paper, probably the registration. "We got a call last night from the husband, saying she hadn't come home." All of this went over Jack's head. He heard the words, but he had to focus to understand what was being said.

𝘖𝘬𝘢𝘺, 𝘤𝘢𝘳 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨? 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘰? Jack sat stone still beside Ann, not moving a muscle. He stared straight ahead at the vehicle. Internally, Jack tried to force himself to stand again, but the instinct that kept him down was stronger. 𝘋𝘢𝘮𝘯 𝘪𝘵, 𝘈𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘦! 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘐 𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘦𝘳!?

In truth Annie had listened. In fact, she had been a fantastic dog, but Jack hadn't cared. Jack had only cared about getting praise and getting laid, neither of which happened with a dog around. Now though all eyes were on Jack.

"We found the car empty, we found one of her shoes." This voice was another dog, a beagle in latex gloves, carrying a muddy looking sneaker. "We think she stumbled out of the wreck-

"-But she's confused and possibly has a head injury." Ann said. She rubbed her eyes. "Husband reported her when?"

"Twelve hours ago." The golden retriever said.

"So we've got to hope in those twelve hours she didn't get herself killed." Ann said. "Okay. Jackie, go scent!" Ann let go of the leash. Jack's legs sprang to life. He leapt up and ran over to the beagle who lowered the shoe for him to stick his nose in.

𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘪𝘵 𝘴𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘵, Jack thought. He buried his face in, inhaling as deep as he could. An instinct picked up on a scent, telling Jack that a Corgi had worn this shoe. Jack raised his nose and began to sniff the air. He could smell it on the car. But he could also smell it on the air. Jack launched himself forward into the tree line.

𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘪𝘵 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘐𝘵 𝘚𝘛𝘖𝘗 𝘐𝘛! Jack rushed through the trees at lightning speed. Branches clung to him and briers cut him. None of it mattered. The same instinct that held Jack hostage told him that he had a job to do. His nose told him where to go. Jack could hear Ann behind him. He leapt over a fallen log and skittered to a stop, sending leaves flying.

In front of him, laying at the base of an oak tree, was the Corgi. Her shirt was bloody and torn, as were her pants. Her eyes were closed and her fur was mattered with blood. She lay with her arm limp beside her, her breathing labored.

Jack raised his head. "Awwwwooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Awwwooo-wooo-wooooooooo!" He howled until his lungs burned, only stopping when Ann approached him.

"Good job boy." Ann whispered, pulling out a treat for him. As Jack chomped down with joy, Ann called in that they'd found the woman.
