You know you should go to the Superhero Club, especially because they would be able to give you more information on your role, your suit, all the other craziness, but you're still kind of pissed off. So you do what you normally do when you're pissed off. You avoid the problem.
Exiting in the school, you are not sure where you want to go, because you don't really want to head home and run into your mom, then get asked how school was going. Better to wait until after she leaves for work. You enter a nearby convenience store to pick up some chips and soda, then decide to head for a park that is in the general direction of home. You figure you can hang out there for an hour or so and no one will be the wiser.
You trudge along, trying to make sense of what happened yesterday. Do you really want to be a part of this Superhero Club? Doesn't that mean you will get pulled into some pretty nasty situations? I mean, they're taking the precaution of hiding your real identity and everything. What if someone figures out who you are? Your mom has it hard enough as it is, and you couldn't even stand contemplating what might happen to your brother.
As you approach the park, your surroundings become quieter, but you are so absorbed in your own thoughts that you are not really paying attention. In fact, the place is oddly deserted. It is only when you look around for a place to sit you realize that no one is there. Not any parents, kids, custodians, no one. You're almost creeped out, but you tell yourself it should be fine, plus you don't really want anyone interrupting your thoughts anyway.
You sit down on one of the playground tunnels and pull the soda bottle out of your backpack. Before you can twist the cap, you hear a sound from inside the plastic tunnel below you. Uh-oh. Was there a wild animal? Maybe that was why no one was around. But you hadn't heard of any zoo escapes. I mean, you were in the suburbs. What could possibly pop out? Curious, you finally hop down off the tunnel and warily look in the entrance.
It's a bit dark inside, but you can make out a human form. Did a kid get left behind? Or maybe get lost? Maybe they fell asleep in there, it's been known to happen. Your concern overcoming your fear, you crawl inside and reach for the form, which you begin to realize is larger than a child. Just as you lay your hand on their arm, you feel something sticky and wet. Then the person's eyes pop open.
"Hey, kid..." the thin man wheezed out softly. "They said everyone was evacuated...Look, don't make a sound. There's a villain..."
The man closes his eyes as he gasps for breath, obviously exhausted. Oh, and you figure out what that sticky stuff is. It's blood. On a very familiar material. A material that looks just like the suit you've been cursing at for 24 hours. The man is probably a superhero. You freeze in shock at the realization, then lift your eyes to see something move out of the treeline far away. You can't get a clear look, but the way it moves gives you the impression it is not entirely human. It probably cannot see you or the hero, since you are hidden by the shadow of the tunnel, but it appears to be searching, and there's only so many places to hide in this park.
"Kid, stay out of sight, okay?" The hero's grimaces and tries to haul himself up. "I'll lead it away from here."
The hero's awkward movement makes you realize just how hurt he probably is. Even so, he is still trying to save your dumb ass that just walked blindly into a fight scene. You have a feeling that the next decision you make is going to affect a helluva lot.
