Jeff returned to the Chronivac, hoping to fix this, or at least to understand what has happened to Jenny/Akemi. Even with all the mental changes, her English skills weren't supposed to be that reduced.
He looked at the display and saw an ominious error message. That doesn't seem good. Akemi watched from behind her boyfriend's back. Unable to parse any of the English text, she just looked at Jeff, hoping he'd be able to fix this.
"Due to an unforeseen error, normal Chronivac functionally has been suspended." it read.
Jeff tried accessing Akemi or hisown profile, but accessisng them was blocked. Worried, he looked if he could do anything at all. He found something. There was a log of changes, and there, there was a restore backup button. That seemed exactly what he was looking for.
"I think I can fix this," Jeff said to Akemi.
The worried Japanese girl just stared at him confused, not understanding anything of what he just said.
"Um," Jeff paused. "Good," he said and held a thumbs up, hoping the simple gesture would work.
She smiled and nodded.
Jeff pressed restore backup. He braced himself for what would hopefully be Jenny's restoration.
"I'm back," he heard a familiar Jenny cheer. "Thank you Jeff-, wait what's going on. Why is she still there?"
Jeff turned around. He saw normal white Jenny alright, but not only that, Akemi was still there right there next to him. Two Jennys?
Both Jennys had a shocked expression. They looked at each other, but then they both in unision turned to Jeff.
"What did you do Jeff?" Jenny, the white one asked.
Akemi also looked at him. Though, she didn't bother questioning him in Japanese, knowing it wouldn't accomplish much.
"Er, you see, there was an error on the Chronivac," he started. He explained to her all about how it was locked, and how he only had one option.
"I see," Jenny mused after hearing his explaination. "So I guess we might be stuck then?"
"Etto?" Akemi said, trying to bring attention to herself. All this talking was done without her. She still had no idea what was going on.
Jenny brought her phone up, and visited Google Translate. She typed in the short summary, so far she understood the situation at least. She then showed the Japanese translation to Akemi. Google Translate wasn't perfect, but she hoped it was enough to get the gist of it.
Akemi read through it a couple of times, she then handed the phone back to Jenny.
"Did you understand it?" Jenny asked her.
"Eh?" Akemi replied.
Jenny tried again, this time typing the phrase on her phone again.
Seeing it, Akemi nodded.
Jeff watched the two versions of his girlfriend interact. There was a question of which one was the "real" one. The natural answer was the normal Jenny, but did that really matter. If Akemi still thought like Jenny and had her memories, then she'd be the one losing her life. He had sympathy towards that. And even with an as serious situation like this, he was still smitten by Akemi's cuteness, wanting to tell her it's all going to work out in the end.
Right now, Jenny was throwing a barrage of translated questions at Akemi. And as she answered, it did seem like she was also "Jenny", just of course with a glitched out version of the mental changes Jenny applied back then.
An hour passed, and the mood was much less grim. The two Jennys were now giggling. Language barrier notwithstanding, there were showing each other pictures, exploring Akemi's social media, and communicating nonverbally. Somehow, Jeff had ended up as the third wheel at the moment, where he was fruitlessly trying to fix the Chronivac, while the girls socialized.
