The naked people jumped off a high ledge into the water. So Ryan went up to the ledge and jumped off. He hit some rocks on the way down. He went underwater and didn’t come back up.
Jason and Jeff went underwater to look for him. Another swimmer named Sam found him. Ryan was bleeding from his head. Sam couldn’t wake him up. Sam was a paramedic, and laid Ryan on dry land. She told Mason to call the ambulance, so Mason did.
Everyone got dressed because the ambulance was coming. Jeff was very worried. Jason was too. They didn’t want to get into trouble.
Jeff thought maybe he should have listened to his dad. If some of the people here are dangerous, no wonder his dad said no. Now Ryan was hurt. He might die. Jeff wished he listened to his dad.
The ambulance came, and the EMTs put Ryan on a stretcher and loaded him into the back of the ambulance.
Jeff got in Jason’s car, and Jason followed the ambulance to the hospital. They both went in to emergency.
Jeff told the people there at the desk he was Ryan’s brother and their parents are out of town. They sat waiting forever.
“I should have listened to my dad,” Jeff said. “Now Ryan might die.”
“I didn’t want this to happen,” Jason said. “Your dad tells you wrong things.”
“Just because my dad is wrong about some things doesn’t mean he’s always wrong. My dad doesn’t care that Jose is Mexican. My dad doesn’t want Ryan hanging out with Jose because he does drugs, and some people die of drugs.”
“Not everyone who does drugs dies. You just have to know when to stop.”
“My friend Ander died from a drug overdose.” Jeff looked at Jason. “I like you, but if I didn’t listen to you, Ryan would be okay now.”
“That doesn’t make your dad always right.”
“No, it doesn’t. But it doesn’t make you always right either.”
