Hearing the FBI agent telling Maria that they were "Looking for Mr Rosaro" made the now female Rosaro slink back into the shadows of the vacant neighbours house. Why would the FBI be looking for him/her? She was not aware that she had done anything illegal. Had she been seen scratching (the former) himself in the groin at the school? Maria had often told him it was a disgusting habit and he should try and restrain 'himself'.
She heard Maria tell the agents "Juan isn't home. I don't know where he is?"
"Are you his wife? Has he been home this evening?"
"He's my brother. I think he has been home but he's not here now. His car is out there on the street. The clothes he wore to work were strewn on the floor. Maybe he has gone out to a bar"
"We would like to check inside"
The neighbours across the road had come out to see what the commotion was about. Maria checked the agents badges and decided they were genuine. They all went inside.
Rosaro slunk around to the backyard of the vacant house and peered over the fence. She couldn't see or hear what was happening inside as the curtains were closed. Had she been in her own body she would have come forward. Surely the punishment for scratching yourself wasn't that severe. But could she do that while looking like a school girl? Rosaro thought not. She would hide somewhere, wait out the 12 hours then hand herself in, first thing in the morning.
Juan, began to panic. The idea of being homeless in a weak female body scared her. She didn't want to be alone. She was also hungry.
Just then the back door of her house opened. Agents came out with glaring torches. She heard someone say "Search the yard. I'll check out the car and ask the neighbours what they have seen"
That was enough for Juan. In a total panic she fled to the back of the yard and scaled the fence to a vacant block behind. She then ran down the street where there was a 24 hour gas station/diner, that was busy all night long with truckers. She needed to be around other people. If asked she would pretend to be the real Ruby Donaldson.
