A Game of Change

Batty's not so bad

added 17 years ago BM

Still wondering about her last card, Sue reached over and placed the dice carefully on Terry's blindly outstretched wing.

"Okay, roll Terry." she prompted him. Terry tilted his bat wing and the two dice dropped onto the game board. One stopped on a 5, casuing Sue's hair to grow a little more, but the other bounced off the table and rolled into the small space under the couch. Sue's hair had another spurt, but they couldn't tell what the die had rolled because they didn't know how much she'd grown.

"You've got the slimmest arms Hannah, can you get it?" Tom asked "I'm a bit stuck up here."

"No problem," Hannah purred as she got up and padded over to the couch. Kneeling down beside it she thrust one furry paw in after the missing die. Terry's sensitive hearing picked up an almost inaudible 'click' as she hit something.

"Was that the die or your claws hitting the back wall?" he asked

"The die." Sue said flatly, holding up her still longer hair. Hannah reached again and bumped the die sideways once more, causing Sue's hair to inch across the floor. Hannah tried again and after 5 more attempts during which Sue's hair grew almost 2 feet she eventually snapped.

"Will you stop doing that! I won't be able to move in a minute!" Sue said angrily

"Yeah, well the lack of an opposable thumb is making it a bit hard!" Hannah shot back

"Stop it! Both of you settle down, this isn't helping." Tom came forward to tower over the two girls, who fell into a resentful silence.

"Maybe I can help find it," Terry put in, "this is my fault after all." With that he got up and went to kneel on top of the couch. Leaning forward so that his head was upside down facing under the couch he let out a sonar screech that shut up Sue and Hannah who had just started arguing again. "It's right at the back, about 2 feet in from the left hand side." He reported

"I can get that!" The nine-year-old Dave jumped up and ran over to Terry. Kneeling down he thrust his whole arm up to the shoulder into the gap and came up with the rogue dice clutched in his small fist. Grinning, he put on Terry's wing and Terry dropped it onto the board.

"Another 5," said Tom, moving the blind Terry's piece forward ten places.

"A double," whispered Sue, thinking about what her card had said.

"Now we'll see what happens." Dave piped up as Sue gasped and clutched at her head.
