James is a young man in his mid 20s, who had been living in this town for most of his life. He helps out his family with running their family resturant, down by the boardwalk. Despite the occasional rumours of occult activity, the town is usually a quiet and sleepy place, where James had not had much of an excuse to leave town. Well, except for when he went to college, where he met his first (and only) girlfriend, who broke up with him after a few weeks. Shortly after that happened, he got hammered at a local bar and met his first (and only) boyfriend. That didn't last too long either.
His poor luck with dating had nothing to do with his looks, it was just that James... wasn't all to interesting. Overall, James is around five foot nine, he doesn't look especially athletic, with his biggest hobby being reading.
He always took the opportunity to read at the boardwalk library, whenever he had some freetime.
But recently, the library down there had closed due to maintenance, so he had to go to a different one this time.
James stood in front of the main entrance to the strange library, feeling a little bit hesitant to enter, partially due to the rumours surrounding this place in particular. He takes a deep breath in, before he steps through the door.
Once inside, James notices that the library seems... bigger from within than it already did. James tries to not give it any thought as he heads to the front desk. There's someone... or something, behind the librarian's desk. A tall figure stands behind the desk, wearing a deep blue cloak, whose face is covered by a plain face-less mask with only small holes for the eyes to peek out from. The sign on the desk notes that this is the head librarian, however, the name seems to have been scratched off...
"Uhmm... hi?" James says, trying not be nervous, "How's it going?"
The head librarian shrugs, giving you the impression that they are mute.
"It's my first time coming by. Do I need a card or..." James tries to say, before the head librarian points a finger to a sign, that says "cards not needed" seemingly written with crayons. James turns back to the librarian to ask them where to begin, only to find the head librarian is mysteriously gone.
James then notices a small data pad for visitors of the library to navigate to different sections of the place. He picks up the library navigation pad to see what is available. It lists several sections, not all of them what he'd expect. Sure there's a "Romance" section if he needed some help there, but there's also "Anatomy: Animals", "Queer Narratives", "Cryptid Sightings" and more.
