When Jeff wanders into the local casino, it looks about the same at first. The slot machines are there and people were using them like normal, but he realized that since they don’t really have a “loss” condition beyond choosing to give up or running out of money, they weren’t affected by the changes, so he decided to wander over to the poker tables.
The player seats were a bit different, each one sitting in a sort of basin and the players seemed extremely tense. Jeff had gotten there right when a game was finishing and he got to see what happened.
The lowest scoring player in the game was a regular and unassuming young man who looked like he was about to cry as he put his cards down. The other players looked at him with a mixture of pity and contempt as he suddenly exploded into a shower of poker chips, mostly raining down into the basin beneath his seat. One landed near Jeff and when he picked it up, he saw that it had the man’s face in profile on one side and the logo of the casino on the other. When the dealer gave Jeff a sharp glance, Jeff tossed the chip into the pile in the basin.
