Schultz stepped out of the cryo pod on steady feet. By the time full feeling had even returned to his limbs, he was already dressed and inspecting his rifle. How quickly he could adjust out of cryo often caught people off guard. Which was the point as unlike the rest of the crew who were only used to cryo as an extended rest between destinations, he had served during the Colony Wars.
Cryo pods were excellent for special ops deployment. Unlike troop transports anti-air defenses couldn't effectively target them and bio scanners don't pick up the occupants until they were thawed. But none of that mattered unless you were able to be ready for action before ground forces swarmed your position.
"Of course that is just about useless on exploration missions," he muttered as he finished his diagnostic.
The requirement that military personnel accompany all exploration teams made perfect sense. That didn't make it enjoyable. While plenty of bacteria, plants, and even the occasional animal have turned up on distant planets, the only recorded combat with other intelligent life to have occurred for him during one of these missions was the time they found an old Colonial Alliance ship that had gone off course. If beating up a few cryo burned grunts even counted.
Schultz smiled remembering the look on the soldiers faces when he broke the news they had lost the war almost a century ago. Then he sighed pulling up the sensors for the cargo bay. Yep, wierd temperature readings, big surprise.
Protocol dictated he needed to head over to 'investigate'. Not that he even knew what anyone expected him to do if something actually happened. It's not like he could shoot the thing into behaving. These missions were dull enough without getting an extra few months worth of awake days on an empty ship because Davis just had to find the fancy rock.
He supposed he was also expected to run a general security sweep while he was up too. Maybe he should get that done first. If he happened to find something 'suspicious' he could at least justify waking someone else up for a little while which at least would provide some company.
